Spring on Linux freezing

One out of every five or ten games freezes within the first 10 minutes or so. I'll be playing along normally, and all of the sudden, the window will go non-responsive and stop refreshing, and I can't move the mouse, and I have to do a kill -9 to take down the process.
It seems to usually happen when I am issuing build, guard, or help build orders, but that is 90% of what I do in the first 10 minutes of most games, so that might be a coincidence. I have already entered this as a bug into the bug reporter, but I wanted to bring it to people's attention here.
I have a ubuntu edgy eft system with 2 GB RAM, and an nvidia card (with the closed source drivers installed). I run in dual screen, windowed mode so that I can use both monitors and not run one at a smaller resolution.
