bad widget

Ok so apparently there is a new widget that automatically gives away all your units right before you comm dies on comm ends games. Now, this was sometimes done before manually, and I didn't have a problem with it then because at least it took a little skill and sense of timing, but at this rate it'll pretty much ruin comm ends team games.

Lolz, you're so mistaken, it doesn't take skill or timing to give your stuff, it just gives an unfair advantage to whoever was watching the screen his commander was in.

If everyone had this script, this wouldn't be a problem at all, I say it should be made default. That way, there still would be a reason against combombing (if you want to play) and no idiot can try to surprise combomb after giving his base.

maybe there should be a wait time, like if you give more than say, 15 units, you'd have to wait 4 seconds before it actually completed the order.

so people could still leave in com ends and share stuff, but not just remove the ends from com ends.

Well I guess the best thing is just not to play comm ends in team games

Lets just make a widget for everything so we wouldn't have to waste time learning shit or waste time getting better.

My next lua project will solve this problem ;)

So you honestly believe ctrl-a ctrl-h takes skill? You have a rather weird definition of skill then, I manage to do that even in games I'm not paying attention in.

Anyone could do that unless it's a surprise combomb, are you suggesting we give combombers another advantage?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he was implying.

I was trying to point out the irony that you don't seem to think paying attention to your commander is a skill.

also it's h, not ctrl-h. Knowing what buttons to press is also a skill.

EDIT:

opps sorry I mean yes, I think combombers need more advantages.

It's not a skill. I pay attention to what I'm typing now, I don't consider *THAT* a skill either.

In my opinion, the existence of this widget is just an side effect of the bigger problem: "com ends" doesn't make any sense in team games.

What *would* make sense would be a single point of failure for the entire team, like a designated commander or structure which must be protected at all costs. But that would be a new feature...

There needs to be a way for the host to ban unfair widgets.

A better solution is to only allow what widgets everyone else has, and include the good ones in the spring distribution.

That's how I see it. Of course, giving all you have to your allies when you leave (instead of self-destructing) should still be possible, and actually default. But sharing single units doesn't really make sense.

I'm personally against the automatic version of this widget, as the decision to share all your units should only be made by the player. However I have a manual version that is available here. To use, put the widget in your widgets folder and add

Code: Select all

bind alt+q luaui kamikaze
to your uikeys.txt file.

I think no one should be using the automatic version because it could go off at the wrong time (if you still have the situation under control), and because it borders on cheating, IMO. However I don't anticipate losing any team games because of it. Losing a player to micro the units is still a big loss in team games.

actually it's usually a bonus to a team when a bad player leaves his units and a better player takes them over.

Are we still playing games with bad players? Damn.

I reckon when a com dies all the units should be left idle for a team mate to take. That way losing a commander is a significant loss, without being game breaking. At the moment in a team game if you lose a commander without significant counterplay, it is basically game over. Unless you hand your units over first....

It might also be fun to allow a game mode were each team has only one 'true' commander and everyone else starts with a 'general' or something which is basically the same as the commander (but looks different). If the commander dies, it is game over for the whole team.
