Bumpy Island prototype

edit: updated to Bumpy Island Beta F:

Below is the old stuff:

Image

Here's a map for testing, I did the heightmap by hand in gimp and the texturing was done with L3DT. It's 8x8 and there are not yet visible metal spots, also the texture is really blurry since L3DT unregistered limits the size. I will hopefully fix these for the final version. Filename is buisb2.sd7.

Hovers can enter the island at a few locations, the slopemap shown in the shot is for a stumpy.

Tell me what you think. :-)

I've tried three SM3 maps. I have an old geforce4 MX 440, so they haven't worked really.

In some older spring version, and with old video drivers, one of them worked (whakamatunga).

Now two crash (twoseas, whakamatunga riri) and one loads but black, without texture (canyon pass).

I have the maps and the infologs, should I report to Mantis? I didn't find any issues when searching SM3. Or are such old videocards too much of a chore to support (even when just falling back to really crude settings would be fine), I don't know.

I know the sm3 maps wouldn't look any better than current maps on my hardware, but they were ok, and would have better performance than smf maps anyway, so they would be an improvement.

If SM3 worked for me, I'd do it, it probably wouldn't be that hard. The wiki could use a point though about what the minimap tag is in the sm3 file.

My Geforce FX 5200 ultra is £18 at ebuyer.co.uk and there're 6200's under £30 too.

Re-rendered the texture and added metal spots...

Finally, after so many setbacks and hardships. I must say that Gimp isn't exactly an example of a sound image editor.

Thanks to Gibbie for making a 16-bit heightmap with photoshop from my 8-bit one. That finally got rid of the ugly tessellation. (Via conversion to 16 bit and then gaussian blur.)

UF mucked up the pictures so no minimap, sorry, I tried many many times.

I'm sick and tired now, feel free to give feedback.

Maybe I should have rendered without shadows.
Also the underwater metalspots are way too dim.
The center metalspots are too close to each other. This is because of a certain problem in the mapping technique that prevented me from seeing the whole map at one time.

Looks suspiciously like Finns Revenge from SupCom beta.

I've never played supcom but went and searched and indeed there are some similarities. I had a previous version with a different more square shaped island but I had to remake completely since there was too little room for ships.
I might make a ground version of the map with steeper hills.
