U use Photoshop.. well first u got to creat patterns... make a little new file 128 x128 for example.. use filter render clouds - notice that clouds borders will not appear, seond thing is to insert shapes.. they are the best way to avoid borderbrakes.. just copy the Piece of Shape looking over ur Border onto the other side - voila.
Merge the Layers from Time to Time - then strg + a (select all) - then edit - define pattern (give it a name)
Open a new - bigger File and use the paint bucket tool, choose pattern -> your created pattern and fill the Area... u will see that especially strong contrasts like for eg black- white make the hated moire effect redo the pattern until this effect has vannished.
Finally get the finnished pattern into your Main Texture File- fill a complete Layer - add a mask, don`t forget to airbrush the borders..

airbrush the borders? does that mean u can paint on the texture map? i was under the impression you could only use the tiles u created? so that it could be tiled by spring
and strg? is that on a foreign keyboard?
I worked under the impression

that u can paint on the texture map- if this is not possible.. just look on Maps like Egypt- if u handpaint it- it will be made of hundreds of tiles - very big and the file oversized
and strg is german for ctrl - sorry...
if i am wrong... then i am in more trouble than u are...

If you create a Layer in PSP - fill it with the wanted tile, add a mask and then start to paint in the mask, you should not make hard borders, if you don`t really want them... Most of the Texturetiless Changing on the Maps are seemless..

If you use Photoshop and work with diffrent Layes, u can use the fill Options to completely fill a Layer with a Pattern, for example Grass - now if you make a second Layer and fill it with Rock, and you want those pieces to blend in, you add a mask to the rock and cut out what should be completely rock. After this step - you choose Airbrush and start softening the Borders, were the diffrent patterns meet and let i look organic.
a Example.. with random textures..

also if you make a selection and feather it, and then fill in the selection, the two textures will be blurred together somewhat

It took me a little while to find it but GIMP has the same feature for anyone interested.

as long as it ends in a 24 bit bmp with the 1024 size everything is fine..
But remember the more u use Tiles .. the smaller the Map gets, the faster it is loaded.. that`s why metallmaps are so small..
