Why are they douches?
They are an essential part of the system.

Nope.

Wow, what a bizarre debacle.

The dude's research was headed in the right direction, but the coder was right. You can't use "Educated" guessing to produce a scientific result.

For example, even I have found real world info on people. One person hacked myupb.com (kinda failed at it, but did some minor damage). I found his home address, called and talked to his dad for half an hour (who, while clueless to what his son was into, was actually a very nice man). Turns out that it was a 15 year old kid. I'm sure many of you are much more capable of accomplishing far more than I did. My point is that it isn't hard, just requires a good bit of time googling, reverse dns and traceroutes (facebook helps too).

But trying to do something on this scale with somewhat spotty facts as a basis? You're playing with some real fire.

I think the real disconnect is that people consider internet = srs bsns. If you're that wrapped up in it, it's probably time to step away for a while.

Interestingly enough, some of us aren't hard to track down at all. I run my own business so therefor I'm easy to track down to anyone with google and 5 minutes. Which is fine. Thankfully my full real name is not known anywhere online or otherwise, and "Ben Woods" couldn't possibly be more generic. Identity theft on me would be fairly difficult for a few reasons, but to find me? That would be easy (bring candy!).

Suffice it to say, I hate facebook. I hated myspace and all that other faggotry, however, the other day I spent 2 hours going through facebook and setting controls on what people can see. I suggest that the rest of you do the same. DO not publish your email, phone number, date of birth, etc on facebook. That's jsut retarded. If they are really your friends they'll just call and ask, otherwise it's none of their fucking business.
