Matroska is my favorite format. I like to pretend .MKv stands for something else. :3
Ugh, such a narcissist!

"Matroska file types are .MKV for video (with subtitles and audio), .MKA for audio-only files and .MKS for subtitles only."

"Q: What file extensions does Matroska use?
A: We currently have 3 different extensions specified :
- .mkv : Used for Video files, as well those containing audio ( movies ) or video only"
http://www.matroska.org/technical/guides/faq/index.html
Hmm... what would mkv stand for then?

MKV files make me angry because I can't play them on my PS3.

Shouldn't you be angry at your playstation?

DownloadHelper Firefox extension, then Handbrake. Pretty sure DownloadHelper itself has a built-in convert function but I wouldn't trust it with anything you actually want to archive or something.

I have a baseline hatred for Sony that is so fundamental to my self-image that I often fail to take it into account... it's too bad they happen to have made the best combination blu-ray/gaming/internet/media player on the market... grumble... (actually, the problem with the MKVs is me being unable to install a working transcoder for it on my linux based media-server... which is my fault, which is why I'm mad at the format and not Sony in this case)

What you really mean is probably H.264 in a matroska container
The codec is pretty good but I cant watch it on my PAL tv + xvid dvdplayer.
