servers is the wrong way to spend the money...The right way would probably be to get infrastructure and start a new project while releasing Minecraft code...

Why are you so insistent that he releases the code? No other studio does while they are in development.

Well thing is he promised a full game to the players...
I think if the source was to become open the game would get developed much faster while Minecraft devs can move on to something new that can bring in big amounts of cash again.
I think the idea and the startup is the most important thing and for that Notch got what he deserved, now its time to "sell" and start something new.

haha thats funny... some dumbass makes some new awesome feature on his free time for free, and then just watches how Notch gets another million from that

If the code is open Obviously the game is no longer sold.

If i developed a game like minecraft I wouldnt take 10Ôé¼ for it either, I mean its not even a real game.

This emulates CREATIVE MODE, which is the mode where you just build stuff.

What makes a good game is
xD
ima go a bit offtopic but i think we should think about some of these things.
Anyways, comercial games always expect 3 things.
- Grafics - you may argue that a good game doesnt need grafics, sorry but any comercialy good game needs a good set of grafics.
Minecraft is set apart by this, cause its a nostalgic game meaning there is no other game of the kind its unique and diferent, this is the advantage. But mods for spring must compete grafic wise player base wise e.t.c... So grafics mater, its the way people set apart games from one another.
- Bug-free - crashing at the first atempt to play it, doesnt help, since the current player base doesnt have patience or respect for the developers work, modern playerbase doesnt care about bug fixes, they want a finished product.
They want cheap instant fun, the lasting gameplay adiction comes after they enjoy the games grafics and starting gameplay, and a bug free game.
- Lasting adicting gameplay - this as many would agree to come first in my list, comes last, only after the games grafics get peoples atention, and only after the player gets the game runing good, that can he enjoy the gameplay that was made for him.
I will divide this into 2 parts, early game (it must be good fast paced intence, and the generalistic gameplay formula must work most times) no cheeze builds, no backward strategys, or bug abuse e.t.c.. the core gameplay must persist, few fun starts and builds can be added later for a fun mix.
late Good lasting gameplay - the hardest to achieve, and can only be made by sound testing and gathering ideas. The interesting thing with starcraft is they made the game unfinished by purpose, if they made a finished game people wouldnt have as mutch fun diving into the diferent units, testing them and saying this is OP, and getting the game slowly balanced and tweeked changed by the course of time.
Same as with the league maps, early ones were simple and generalistic, complexity grows by each patch.
ok so this is what i think about commercial game development what you guys think the rigth steps are?

problem is the guy from infiniminer didnt got anything, and the minecraft dude got the gold
but that hapens with all evolution, most scietific developments arent used by the makers themselves but by people who use theyr ideas.
small offtopic

Go look at some real games, definitely this formula can be (commercially) succesful!
