someone tested it ? im fan of gothic series, but last one was such a uber shit (not to mention add-on, which was worst in the history of gaming business).

screenies look good, but game receives totally random notes, very different. something that bothers me most are quests, anything original ? gothic 3 was shit mainly becouse of quests - find, kill, bring, usually kill again, loop :(

I remember gothic1 where I played till I came to the camp of the strange sect that smoked this herb.
I just stayed there and got high, I dont think I finished the game

Gothic games they were a raw diamond they could be fun but they also could suck.

G3 I think was so bugged that the community fixed it, not the devs.

Arcania took a step away from the original Gothic gameplay - it now is more of a Knights of the Temple II type of game. With that said it now focuses more on action and combat together with a rather simple skill system...

The reviews (at least for the PC version - the X360 one might have some technical flaws but I don't know much about that) tend to give different notes as they use different scales. When you compare it to the previous games it rather sucks as many of the original Gothic elements aren't there anymore or really are different. If you don't use this Gothic comparison you end up with with a good game but nothing extraordinary at the same time having no qualities like Gothic 1 and 2 had...

I finished it yesterday and well I sort of can recommend it. It wasted lots of its potential and especially the 2nd half of the game is sort of a sad thing. The story itself isn't that bad (except for maybe the ending which is bullshit) but the storytelling lacks quality and you have pretty much the same problem Risen had later on. In Risen you at a certain point only got another trap filled temple with lizard men after another where in Arcania it's about catacombs with undead showing up again and again...

So if you are looking for a Gothic like game go and get Risen if you didn't play that already - it's from the same guys who did Gothic 1-3. You should buy Arcania if you're interested in how the story goes on and are happy with a gameplay like in Knights of the Temple II. There also is a demo of Arcania featuring the tutorial region so maybe try that first...

same goes for me - gamestar gave it a 66 % "because they built a car, and forgot to add the motivation motor- meaning original quests, a world that feels alive, a story you could care about."

Buy Risen, its way better- name changed, original gothic dev team stayed.

I played the whole game in its entirety. I finished it just last week.

Simply put: It's decent, but shallow.

The graphics and environments in the game are nothing short of stunning, however. Especially as the game progresses, it's easily one of the most beautiful and grand games I've ever played. The environment is very much to scale, with castles feeling like castles and monasteries at the top of huge cliffs feeling like just that. If you have a top of the line PC like me, you'll marvel at the graphics throughout the whole game.

Gameplay-wise...the main quest is meh. It's not particularly compelling, but it's not horrible I guess. The side quests are also meh. It's pretty much "oh hey an adventurer! I need 3 of these things! Go kill a bunch of these other things and give me their these things, and I'll give you money".

The combat isn't too bad, actually. I played the game on hard as 75% mage 25% melee, and while I was able to nuke stuff, I was usually two-hit by almost anything. So that forced me to learn how to use the combat system, and it balanced out pretty well.

The skill tree is simple, but whether that's good or bad will depend on you. I kind of like that it's simple because more effort is put into other areas of the game.

You'll only get about 4 different torso armor sets during the game (well, 4 for each class). I think this is great because in the middle ages you didn't come across nice suits of chain mail every day...

Overall, I'd say it's a game for people who like RPGs. If you don't already like RPGs, I wouldn't bother. But if you do, it's probably worth a play through...though I'm not sure that I'd pay $50 for it. Probably $30.

Oh and FYI I also played Risen. Risen, in my opinion, was much better in every category except the graphics (which were still good) and combat. Oddly enough I didn't finish risen because I got bored at the end when I had to go retrieve the pieces of the armor...I just said screw that, I already know the ending anyway. That being said, Risen's storyline was much more compelling and interesting. The characters were also much better and more interesting. Furthermore, Risen really made me feel like I was in the middle ages. Magic isn't a common thing in Risen either - as it should be. You make it a good portion of the way through the game before you can really use magic a lot...and even then, you'll be smacking stuff up close. Think gandalf type magic.

Would you recommend it for people who only like good RPGs?

You mean an MMO?
Ruin another franchise by making it a retarded and boring grindfest?

Well, Interplay is planning to start their beta soon, I believe. They keep sending me little joke and fluff emails, which are a little comforting as I greatly dislike MMOs.
