SpringFiles v3.0 Preview

Post by jj »

It's time for something new,
since the current Springfiles site is a bit old and the code even older.

I'm completely rewriting the site with CMS Drupal.
This gives the opportunity to speed up the development and have focus on new features and less buggy code.
You can watch the progress here:
http://dev.springfiles.com

You can see the first design work here:
http://springfiles.com/show_file.php?id=2812

It's still a bit messy, need some work though.

Post a reply if you have suggestions, ideas or other things on your mind.

Anyone who wants to help with the design work, CMS content or coding some custom modules (drupal knowledge needed) is welcome.

some new features that will definitly make it to v3.0:
  • File versions of a file are kept on 1 page
  • News articles
  • Some info about spring (basic info for new visitors)
  • A search API (request by Abma)
  • Better Mirror system (users can add mirrors on-site, files are better syncronized with a cron
  • File availability at mirror locations cron checked and saved into DB
  • MD5 hash checking / Searching

This certainly looks better I'd say. Will there be a way to filter out the old mods that don't work with current versions of spring?

I was thinking about that.
Not sure how it can be done.

If an uploader can add dependencies for a file,
Spring 0.82.6.1 for example, then we still don't know if it will work with an upcoming version.

Any ideas?

Maybe it's just me but I prefer the current layout to that preview :?

for maps that have no pictures at all, maybe it could show the minimap at least if that can be done.

search should obey the folder you are in, ie i am in "mods" folder and search "xta":
the results include tons of old replays and stuff.
all the replays could be deleted anyways, as they are from 2008 or something..?

the "random" box should only show stuff that works with current version of spring.

Trademark, nice work!
Still it's not a stunning design but yours is at least clean.

Since some people want to keep the old design, i made a poll on the website. check it out http://springfiles.com

Yeah, it doesnt have much of a graphical fancyness left anymore then, but honestly, it doesnt need to. Downloads site isnt trying to entertain people nor trying to get their attention, thus; it should remain simple and easy to use, and nevertheless: clean. I appreciate sites that offers quick and clean way to access files, rather than sites that have mind-blowing (in other words: confusing) design with flash menus and full of javascript and interactive realtime dynamic epicness.

The old design is awful. New design is much easier to navigate.

The new one looks good, but it needs to blend in better. Right now, the white parts look classy, but a little out of place.

I'd recommend adding similar accents across the site design. I'm not sure how this'll work out, though...
