Metall Surface

I need some help, i have seen, quite some time ago, in a weapon catalogue, a old gun, which metall surface was reworked in a way, so it did shine in all sorts of colours. I want to use that, in some distorted way for some of the Centrails Textures, but i for heavens sake, dont remember the name of the surface colouring. Help would be appreciated, thx.

your description reminds me of pearlescent effects like you'd see on in cars in the late 1990s

probably not what you mean though :P

some sort of this?

its "shiny" and colorfull but more like oil in water.
ie the stuff you see on some badly tuned cars.

for weapons this is common i think:
not colorfull though, makes really dark black.

You're not just referring to polychromatic/metallic paint effects either, right?

EDIT: Oh, this effect is generated by heating metals to various temperatures near their temper point, then letting them cool. People do it with Titanium at times. Alternatively, you use an interference pattern. It will take me a few minutes to think through the trivial metalworking knowledge I have and give you something more useful - but you can probably find out what you want to know from here using Google.

thx knorke, thx everybody, but no, it is really colourfull, it was on one of those oldtime winchester guns, curse me for forgetting the name of that surface technique, it was really colourfull - and it didnt talk or sing to me. I would remember that, it was pretty unique from everything else in my enviroment.

Intersting things you find, never searched for them, but hey, take it while you leave it. It was some sort of hardened steel..

Something like this? (I believe Neddie was describing the process used to achieve this look.)

yes, thats more like it. Maybee i missunderstood, i googled br├╝nieren (or burnished steel) and the first pictures to come up with, were not

Sorry to keep you troubled with this, but in order to go scifi, like my infringment object hl2 did (remember that alien metall the combine barriers were from), i have ressemble them, when it comes to exotic materials used on tank, building and armour in general.

Found this site by the way:
http://www.vasecandle.com/mosaic_glass.htm

Also this comes close - but i somehow get that feeling, that cameras dont catch such shifting colour patterns

edit: Found it! I guess, from close up, it looks like it.
Its called plasma nitrition, its a sort of surface refinement. Finding that stuff was a nice detour, man there is so much metall out there. Some even heavy!
