Anyone geocache?

Most smart phones make excellent geocaching devices.

just one more step in training humans to act like drones.
its like...
"go get me the stick! where is the stick? ... good boy!"

or maybe the thrill of exploring new places and searching for treasure

you... HIPPIE!!

pro tip: if you get the idea to go in the evening, wait until next day. by the time you get off the sofa its already dark and you end up in the forest looking for a "sign" on some brickwall using an empty lighter and cellphone displays as light

I never quite understood the allure of geocache'ing. If people like it, then go for it.

As for me, navigating in the back country for days with a good old fashioned map is what I consider thrilling.

Sounds like a great tool for kidnappers and serial killers. Just create a geocache in some isolated location and stake it out until some suckers turn up.

For extra psycho points boobytrap the cache.

Of course I'm joking but the whole sport sounds like a dangerous hobby.

I usually search for really ugly places, thorns, mud, hornetsnest, anthills, by your powers combined, you shall become the next geocache, and then i hide something really, really dissapointing, packed and wrapped in multiple packages.. its a lot of work, and sometimes those stinging nettles can be really nasty, but for the lulz, one needs to make sacrifices..

Actually, you can do that too. The coordinates are available. With a compass and map reading skills its completely up to you if you arrive at the correct destination. Some geocaching applications even have options to assist with this - such as a basic compass.

Geocaching is really an excuse to get outside, get some exercise, and enjoy nature. Besides that, you might be surprised at how many caches are actually not off on some desert isle. Many may be in your local parks, neighborhood, and bike/foot trails.

There are also many types of geocaching. They range some sight seeing (the sight is the cache) to multi-location caches. The later typically has a series of hints which much be decoded to determine the next location.

If you haven't tried it, you may find you enjoy it more than you'd initially expect. And all too often you discover areas in your community and/or parks you never knew existed. And if you already have a smart phone, chances are you already have everything you need to give it a try.

Paranoid much? Geocaching has been going on almost as long as semi-affordable, hand held GPSes have been available. With your logic simply going out side is a "dangerous hobby." Seriously.

Then again, maybe you have far more dangerous birds and squirrels in your neck of the woods.

Geocaching is probably considered an extreme sport in Israel.

Though I do agree, something like geocaching in a high risk area likely wouldn't be the best of decisions? But most of us don't live in that world.

BTW, the number of caches obviously differs from place to place. I just want to stress, geocaching does not require some deep, dark African, epic exploration effort.

I'll give you an idea of just how close caches may be to you right now. There are hundreds of caches within five miles of my house. There is even a cache right outside of a local Starbucks which hundreds of people pass by everyday, never even realizing its there. There are roughly a dozen caches within a few blocks of my house.

Again, you might be surprised just how prevalent geocaching is in your area. It might be going on right under your nose.

Hardly as dangerous as driving, boating, rock climbing, swimming or backpacking.

for some geocaches you have to do these things but there is both a difficulty and terrain rating. easiest ratings are basically just walking through the park.
For some a bit of math is required to solve riddles or just for navigating.

In front of our local railway station there was a mailbox on a wall, hidden by bushs/scrub. The key to open it was in a bicycle shelter thing, fixed with a magnet to the roof. Quite cool to find this.

Climbing waterfalls for treasure is pretty awesome.

Sounds fun. I didn't know that there was something like that where I live, but after searching on the internet it appears as though there's a Geocach on the surface exposure of the Baton Rouge fault. It says that this is an active fault line that damages structures over a period of time, but that it doesn't produce earthquakes. Neat. I wonder what kind of stuff they'd have in that Geocach. I put a little book, a bracelet, or a Plants vs. Zombies figurine in there. Arr, treasure. Does anyone know what's written in Geocach logbooks? Who gets to decide what goes in the Geocach anyway?
