I don't know about all these fears but if such a thing was available I'd definitely want some super smart mouse as a pet.

They're Pranky and The Pain
Yes, Pranky and The Pain
One is a genius
The other's insane.
They're laboratory mice
Their genes have been spliced
They're dinky
They're Pranky and The Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain
Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain
Pain.
Before each night is done
Their plan will be unfurled
By the dawning of the sun
They'll take over the world.
They're Pranky and The Pain
Yes, Pranky and The Pain
Their twilight campaign
Is easy to explain.
To prove their mousey worth
They'll overthrow the Earth
They're Pranky
They're Pranky and The Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain
Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain
Narf!

If we successfully bio engineer smart mice, we'll have to bio engineer smarter humans and super soldiers to take them out. Smartcats!

I dont get it TBH....
Mice breed so fast...why not cross for intelligence and eventually get very smart specimens.

Mice breed so fast...why not cross for size and eventually get very huge specimens.

Imagine a micelike species building starships, and then meeting something human sized: " This is the heavy cruiser MoonisCheese, please respond!"
"Heavy Cruiser? We just see a tiny fighter- they must have stealth technologies."

Yeah but everyone knows evolutions is nonsense.
The world was created 6k years ago and everything was created simultaneously.

I hate rodents. Disgusting creatures, almost as vile as monkeys.

How do you meassure the intelligence of a mouse?
How would you tell apart a mouse with an IQ of 100 and another one with an IQ of 300?
Mice with enhanced intelligence might be expected to outsmart, out-compete, even fight and kill off, and hence to spread and supplant
Would the 300 IQ mice really survive better in nature? If yes, why did evolution not produce more clever mice? Would the smart mice forget some of their instincts etc. that help them survive in nature?
Sometimes intelligence is just not needed.
in fact, being smaller, more numerous, and shorter-lived, supermice might evolve even faster THAN faster than hominids
Lets say in a labortory evolution can happen at 10x speed. Then after 50 years of breeding mice you have 500 "nature evolution years." Not very much if you think how long mice have existed on this planet.
Two things are very different and I think the article is not clear on that:
1) "assortative mating select for intelligence" -> That has been done for years. Not always selecting for intelligence but various factors. See dogs, cows, horses etc. This process can only be speed up so much. Also any of the "new" dogs would probally lose against wolves in the wild. (dogs were not created for that but still)
2) "genetic engineering" as in directly manipulating DNA. I think science is still in the trial & error phase there. Eventually some impressive stuff will sure come out of this.
If the lifespans of these mice would be so short (for faster evolution), that goes against the goal of reaching high intelligence. If the mouse is supposed to
"reach ManÔÇÖs (current) mental level" it will have to have a similiar lifetime.
Of course "intelligence" can not only be archived by experience, learning etc. For example spiders build these complex webs without having to learn it. But that is not intelligence, thats instinct and reflexes.
tl;dr i dont even know what this article decided to even more like wanted to say like. Does not give much content beside "genetic engineering can be risky."
So make the mice really large, this way advances are easily visible.

If you stress out a mouse by making really loud noises, it will have trouble remembering things and swimming to where it wants to go. Mice look really cute when they're swimming too. They wag their tails like tadpoles.

Eeek!
Like we need more of them!
Adults are typically 5ÔÇô9 kg (11ÔÇô20 lb) in weight, and 40ÔÇô60 cm (16ÔÇô24 in) in body length, with a 30ÔÇô45 cm (12ÔÇô18 in) tail.
