No sound (Ubuntu 10.04)

I am getting no sound ingame (that is, sound systemwide cuts out once I join a game). pavucontrol states that there is output, but I hear nothing.

Try killing pulseaudio (can you still do that in 10.04?), that seems to have worked fairly nicely in the past.
