It's scary that the commercial world is so powerful they can promote violence like this in the name of profit and there's so little that we can do about it that the consumer takes the blame for buying the products.

Even if conflict mineral trade is reduced, they'll move to drugs or something else, so I don't think the problem gets solved.

Honestly, Africa is so FUBAR, I think the UN should imperialize it and destroy all the organized crime there by force. The world powers are far too pussy to take any initiative like that though.

Well. If enough soccer mom's feel bad for it and ask for something to be done, and refuse to buy product's that aren't guaranteed to be conflict mineral free, than it would cut them off in that regard. It is unfortunate that this stuff is in almost everything we use today.

I wonder how many countries saw the USA invade Iraq and think "What? Iraq? I thought we were first on the list!"

If we get the mineral's I doubt there is reason to invade. If they get tight on the mineral's and think they can pull some leverage on us, then we flex the machine. No reason to do that when we are getting what we want. In fact legitimizing the minerals might make it cost more for the producers and the consumers.

So, to get conflict free minerals we should start a huge conflict and steal the minerals from them? Great plan! :P

Jk, I know what you mean, and I partly agree. Imo UN should interfere in cases of blatant human rights violations. I suppose I could even pay some extra taxes to see that done.

That never worked for anything. Ok, maybe when it involved cute animals like dolphins being trapped in fishnets or something.

The slave trade and minor sex trade in africa is a multi billion dollar industry. Rape is common and unpunished. In many areas, people will simply kill each other over property disputes, and the one left alive gets to keep the goods.

There is no where on earth that human rights violations are more prevalent or disturbing.

Not to say that ALL of Africa is bad, but there are dozens of regions that are worse than completely lawless.
