Ultimate Fighting 112

what the heck did i just watch?

Henzo Gracie gets swept over and over, asking his opponent for a hand to stand back up...

BJ penn gets beaten up and taken down, loses his belt, completely outclassed in speed IMO...

and then, of course, the anderson silva vs. demian maia fight... silva screws around and clowns for the first 2 1/2 rounds, then gets punched in the ear and loses all of his gas...

anderson silva. for the people who arent familiar, the guy is absolutely ridiculously good... basically a micheal jordan or a pro_randy of ultimate fighting... however, he's certainly not perfect ... recently he was under a lot of criticism for not finishing his fights and taunting his opponents...

and let's talk about the silva fight for a second... really, wtf was he doing... he's so dangerous, and so strong... if he hadn't screwed around the way that he did, the fight could have been over in the first or second easily. i really don't approve of him taunting and making fun of his opponent, pretty pathetic TBH if he doesn't go on to win the fight convincingly... especially when he knows he's fighting against a jiu jitsu fighter, and isn't going to be dealing with much standup... that's like playing TA, and getting pissed off at your opponent for picking ARM because you want him to spam AKs...

i'm really interested in what other people think of silva; i was a big fan when he was coming up but i really hate his trollish attitude... it's like brock lesnar i guess, i really dislike the guy but at the same time i can't wait to see their next fight.

and really, i hope that anderson silva drops weight so he can challenge georges st. pierre, and gets folded like understarched laundry.

video to follow when i find a link

It was a poorly put together card. Although the BJ frankie fight was a pretty good watch, although the gameplan BJ came in with was a HUGE misjudgment. The Grove vs Munios fight was SPECTACULAR.

I don't know, not the best worth of money I've ever gotten out of a UFC event, but not the worst either. It was fun to watch Anderson in the first 3 rounds, but he must have felt like a moron when he gassed.

[edit] with the renso fight... did you really expect something spectacular out of the old guy division of the UFC? I don't mind that they are putting on these kind of fights, and keeping these veteran fighters employed even beyond the point where they are really in the mix for contendership... But I think some of the fans expect way more out of them than is realistic. Hughes might have defended 6 straight title shots in a row, but he's not really that fast, he's not really that much of a genetic freak, and his skills aren't really that absurdly good, he was just the best of an era, not the best of all time.

So these ones are like "real" fighting, not pro wrestling?

There's no spandex, capes, flamboyant behavior, or "haw haw haw, I have clearly defeated you, I will now turn my back and garner my well-deserved praise from the audience, secure in the knowledge that you have surely not just stood up and been handed a chair", right?

It's boxing with fewer rules basically. It's not a sports entertainment event, it's a sport. Who knows, there's probably just as much corruption and thrown fights and what not as we saw from boxing's history, but it's fair to say that the results are almost definitely not determined by the upper management of the organization for the sake of dramatic effect.

Visually, it looks like you see pretty much exactly what would happen if you took Olympic kick boxing and Olympic wrestling and merged them together with Japanese Jui Jitsu. So if you consider those olympic sports as legitimate it's a very fair assumption to make that what is happening in MMA is equally legitimate.

I guess if you want to hard enough you can still believe it's fake, but in my opinion it's about as rational a belief as the belief that kung fu practitioners have the kind of super human powers you see in the movies.

Hmm... I never much cared for contact sports like that one way or the other. I mean, in terms of watching it, I'd rather watch... just about anything else, really. I started 5th grade like 6 feet tall and naturally semi-muscular (genetics?) so I never got into any RL fights, maybe that's why :P

my whole issue with the last UFC was that is WAS like watching wrestling... instead of a -fight- i would say at the very least that the anderson silva vs. demian maia was more like some sort of strange movie scene (the announcers said so too, if you can trust joe rogan)

and that's very un-canadian of you, caydr ^^. last year our canadian athlete of the year was georges st. pierre, and he hasn't lost his title yet after lots of difficult fights.

and to me, i can't be bothered watching sports with blurred rules. time for me to be un-canadian; i can't watch hockey anymore because it seems to be just a bunch of no-talent toughguys for the most part... if i want to watch someone get socked in the face, i'll watch UFC, if i want to watch a proper team game involving strategy and a concerted effort, i'll watch soccer.

and really it is a purists sport; it takes two combatants, gives them no leeway in terms of rules... if you get your ass kicked more than the other guy, you lose.

anyways the one last weekend was a mess; don't watch that one, whatever you do.

watch this video instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCnmb0mhU-Y

I couldn't believe when Dan Hardy didn't tap. UFC 111 was a GREAT show. Loved it.

Ya, but you can't win em all, it's too bad 112 was a disappointment, the card looked so strong on paper, except for the obviously bad decision to put Silva against another jits guy.

Still, Silva has some boring fights, but honestly, I think part of it is just that the expectations are so high for him. His good fights remind me of Roy Jones Jr highlight reels. Anderson is just kind of out there on a different when he's on point. It's too bad he's so hit and miss.

It was better than the strike force event. That's for sure.

yeah; the strikeforce was pretty hurting; but i guess that's the risk you take with the free events... i expect more from gegard mousassi

in another way though; at least they are representing a different MMA league than UFC, there's a whole ton of them out there and i think it's a bit fucked up how in recent years UFC has billed themselves as the -only- martial arts show in town

... the commentary was better for me in strikeforce; i cant stand some of the crap joe rogan says

I'd pay to watch just about anything if we could get George Bush doing the commentary. Has to be picture-in-picture though, to catch the gestures. I really honestly miss "I'm talkin down a-cha" voice.

WEC last night was freaking amazing. i feel like every bad event i've watched recently was made up for by it; i had forgotten how awesome fights are @ 145 pounds... forget the big dudes, they are too slow

my new favourite fighter is "the korean zombie" even though he lost which was total BS
