Spring RTS Engine

i have to go with a somewhat obscure hit: crystalis.

this game is so unbelievably ahead of its time. one of the first action rpgs ever, and in my opinion still one of the best ever made. i've finished it 15 or 20 times, and every time its still fun as hell. of course, the nostalgia from having played it when i was 6 years old helps, but i still insist that it's worth trying if you are fan of the genre.





i made it my avatar since its so good. lots of people compare it to zelda, but this game fucking blows zelda away in every category: complexity, story, music, graphics, gameplay, etc.

its seriously pitiful that 95% of modern games are not as polished as this one. the challenge ramping up is perfect, as is the balance between linearity and the freedom to explore. there are plenty of puzzles around, most of which require you to think creatively. i'd suggest only resorting to a walkthrough if you are completely stuck, and your telepathy spell isn't providing any useful hints

in conclusion, crystalis is ftw.

I only ever got to play Mario 3 and Kirby, but we had a C64 at home with an asston of games my dad brought home from the school he taught at.

So... of the two, Kirby was my game of choice because my uber micro didn't develop until fifth grade or so, when I started playing Descent compulsively.

I see all the best have already been mentioned in here - Contra, Mario 3, and Megaman 2 (Megaman 3 does provide a worthy sequel, though).

Never could get past the fact that in megaman games you can't aim to save your life, often literally.

Being able to aim is a weapon you get. In MM2 it's the Metal Blades, in M3 it's the Shadow Blades.

Super Mario Bros. 2, because you get to throw stuff at other stuff.

(Megman 2, Contra, Gradius and some others are up there in my book as well).

As splinter says, the turtles, "were all so cute."

I would say Mario, Contra & Jackal to be my favs from original NES.

Although TMNT, Felix the Cat and Adventures of Bajou Billy (god took some time to look that one up) were loads of fun aswell.

in retrospect, i think i emotionally scarred myself by playing games like bionic commando and battletoads when i was a kid. it would probably explain why im able to consistently get my ass kicked on spring and yet come back for more.
