Dragon apocalypse and zombie apocalypse are both up there but really, classic economic collapse followed by massive depopulation takes the cake.

so how does economic collapse lead to massive depopulation?

Economic collapse leads to war over resources, a collapse of the transportation infrastructure and the loosening of government health regulations. Diseases ride along the remaining paths of travel, urban centers become stricken with famine, and warfare rolls through the suburbs/slums surrounding most cities, from the developed world to the Global South.

I'm very pro-Zombie Apocalypse... but Roman-Catholic Apocalypse with the Horses and seals and rains of fire and such wins hands down.

Fantastically beautiful aliens destroy the earth's civilizations in their endless search for the perfect sex slave. Everybody eventually dies of exhaustion.

The word apocalypse literally means "revelation", or "lifting of the veil". It's the Greek title of the biblical book of Revelation. Over time, the English word has become synonymous with the end of the world because that's the part of Relevation with which most people are familiar.

The biblical scenario is nothing to sneeze at. You've got your huge Orwellian government led by a tyrant, associated economic problems, famines, plagues, wars, and brutal oppression (of Jews/Christians). Something like 66% of the earth's population dies in a wave of judgments/disasters reminiscent of the 10 plagues of Egypt.

nuh- uh, that's Aztec style. The Mayans all dissappeared before the Spaniards reached their peninsula. More on that here.

They pretty much disappeared for no know reason, although there is evidence that says that they just abandoned their cities, walked into the surrounding forests, and died there. This may seem strange until you realize that Mayan religion involved rituals such as stabbing oneself in the balls with knives for fear that not doing so will cause the sun to fail to rise.

Their balls might have saved the solar system.
We will never know.

Hm. If I had to make a choice, I think the whole water world thing with the melted polar ice caps would be the best way to go. After all, there may still be some survivors living in an Atlantis station or something like that.

I bet it would be strange to live underwater. Light reflects in all different ways underwater making images and objects appear as though they are in a location that they are not in, sort of like how a fish is actually slightly to the side of where it appears to be when looking at it through water.

The different locating thing is caused by defraction of light, because light travels slower in water than it does in air/glass.
So if your an underwater creature, like Kevin Costner, living in water world, its fine for you.
