Pics taken from SME, so not of Spring rendering beauty quality. But you get the jist.

Don't worry, though, once your sight starts to go you get hardware anti-aliasing.

I would vote for a slightly dramatic interpretation of the textures to give it a better feel, too.
And, were the cliffs really that short? Sorry, been ages since I looked at photos from D-Day, I thought they were somewhere in the hundred-meter range.

They are in the hundred-meter range. Smoth had the same note.

Hush, it's not my fault, SME starts to heavily pixelize everything after awhile.
@mountains: There were some parts of beaches (like Omaha and Point Du Hoc) where there were intense steep vertical cliffs; other places there was only a 5-foot high sea wall seperating beach from flat farmland. It will be steep enough that infantry can not climb it, but also low enough that units on the tops of the cliffs will not have problems firing onto the beach.

After a while? How exactly?
(I don't like the beach texture too... please supply new ones

)
I do not use mipmaps.
This is why distant textures look noisy, but I guess you mean something different?

If you look at Picture #5 you can see that there's a bit of pixelization occuring. I've only noticed it a few times but it seems to happen after extended periods of heightmap editing very large maps; the shading (not the actual geometry) will begin to be rendered heavily pixelized.
edit: This may actually have to do with my hardware; just now I opened SME and it was already heavily pixelized, and my computer has been running a lot of stuff for awhile now, maybe its automatically scaling down shading rendering because of taxed GPU or something.

I only have pictures of me at point du hoc. I didn't take any pictures at the beach. There was this big gay abstract sculpture that ruined the view.

@SpikedHelmet:
Hmm, I can not clearly see the problem in image #5. But:
Could you check if you accidentally switched of "smooth Normal calculation" by hitting N? (Check in Settings->Render Settings)
Render Settings which affect shading:
-smooth Normal calculation: should be enabled
-faster smooth Normal calculation: should be disabled
