These people are awesome beyond description (pics)

A couple galleries I found of real-life people in STALKER-style gear. Apparently STALKER has a much bigger following in Russia... Some photoshop and special effects here and there but the most impressive stuff is just the fact that some of it looks like a screenshot out of the game.

Looks like some (if not all) of those are airsoft players. Which won't be surprising considering that Stalker-themed airsoft games are quite popular in exUSSR.

Yeah that would explain how they got all the military-looking hardware. But in some of the pictures they're actually driving a tank!

Well, not a tank. One of those... APCs, I guess. It's a big armored thing with a gun. Screw it, it's a tank.

It looks like some people took the IRL mmo meme too seriously.

After reading through the links, I found out it indeed was an airsoft game. A good one at that (the STALKER game my local airsoft community organizes is pale in comparison). I haven't noticed any vehicles on the photos though.

Military vehicles on airsoft games are nothing unusual. For ex. Ukrainian Airsoft Federation organises 2 big games yearly ("season opening" and "season closing"), those take part on an actual military training grounds and things like BTR and BRDM are used (w/o their weapons ofc), not to mention military transport trucks. This costs money ofc, but the experience is well worth it (and the army is underfunded enough that they are willing to lend those vehicles for a reasonable sum).

haha, that's kind of funny. We should try that in Canada, maybe we'd be able to afford our first rifle. We presently make do with attack beavers and using a blowhorn to shout "I think they're terrorists!" and the guys down south come running.

3 ak47 (called spetsnaz, dunno, I like them because they have no stocks)
1 ak 47 (called spetsnaz, dunno, but has a folding stock)
1 standard ak with drum magazine and regular mags
1 mp5 sd6

Was really a good time, I stopped playing when they started allowing pre-teens to play.

Weren't some of those "AK-47 Spetznaz Beta"? If so, then that's a completely fictional gun (taken from some game if I remember right) with no real-world prototype. Not that it matters much (but it does matter for some).

That's me with my "AK-74" (Chinese CYMA CM.031)
That's me
That's me

:-) There are some awesome Air Soft stuff in England. I've never played Air Soft on terrain as elaborate as this:

I really like my m16.

They are playing in some kind of old fort, or maybe abandoned military base. Very cool terrain indeed.

We have some places like that, but not all can be accessed/are safe enough to play in. There are some games in abandoned submarine base in Crimea, probably looks much like this one (I've never been to that game so can't tell from my own experience). Abandoned tank base we have locally isn't half as much fun.

Not being a fan of Airsoft, can somebody explain how it differs from paintball? I can see that there's a greater fixation on real-world-warfare simulation (where Paintball tries to present itself as a sport rather than a war-game)... but how does one register a hit? Are you on the honour system to say "ow, yeah, he hit me"?

I don't see a lot of facial covering - are airsoft shots safe enough that all you need are safety-glasses?

Pretty much ow you hit me. Followed by ow, fuck, fuck, stop shooting.

Some places do allow for only glasses, my group required facial protection... but they also allowed for glasses around the same time they let minors play.

As for safety: around where I live we only require glasses. People are free to bring full facial protection (and also helmets and body armor) if they wish, but they most probably wouldn't - it limits visibility and is not very convenient to wear during summer (too hot). No glasses = no game, without exceptions. So far there were 3 cases of chipped teeth because of a BB hit, that's all the 'serious' injury we had due to BB fire (not counting small bruises).

Hits are registered on a 'honor' base. If someone is noticed for ignoring hits, next time he will be hit with more bullets, longer bursts, grenades until he understands the rules (and will be awarded a title of MacLeod), if that doesn't help - he won't be taking part in our next game, that's all. Hits from 100+ mps guns are hard to ignore anyway. Our rules also state that point-blank firing is to be avoided - if you've got into 2 meters range of someone, you can just point gun at him and proclaim him dead without actually shooting (happens in urban scenarios mostly).

can't do that in the states, too much of a chance of someone suing you for a chipped tooth :\.
