This is now a discussion of a youth modification of Left 4 Dead.
I say, melee would remain pushing but with objects such as bats, mitts and action figures - roughly balanced with one another and/or cosmetic in nature. You would pick them up around, wandering through environments. As for the ranged weapons, well... obviously a slingshot for the pistol, maybe a BB gun for the Hunting Rifle, Water Balloon for the Molotov...
