Even if it was possible to make 1024*1024 maps I doubt any graphics software would support it let alone your PC blowing up.

That sounds about right, but assuming that, you would need 320GB+ of memory to edit a 1024*1024 map file in one sitting.

it is a limitation of the map texture map file. jpg/bmp can only be so big. Want bigger maps? then spring needs texture splatting.

what's the actual pixel size for a 1024x1024 map?
my computer can handle 48000x48000 pixel images in photoshop and still be very usable, haven't tested anything larger.

the height map is fine it is the texture map that is the limitation.
we have been through all of this ad nauseum.

Don't remember/care to I would have to sit down and figure it out again. it isn't like we can really feasibly run a 40X40. the amount of tiles involved can cut your fps to near nothing.

the 40X40 map is made of 100000s of tiles all of those tiles use up your video card's memory. If the video memory runs out we see game performance suffer. Add to that textured s3o models for features and the game.

you need to look at a map uncompressed. That all fills up your video memory. memory that is also needed for your effects and other things.
It does cause slowdown esp if the map has a lot of detail.

If you have a blank texture map with 1 colour and a flat height map, you can start considering 64*64 , 128*128 but you can sure as hell forget 1024 * 1024.
