Brotherhood Wars

Hello

I've come up with an extremely detailed idea for an RTS mod for Spring, but unfortunately I do not know a thing about coding or how to modify Spring, or even where to begin.

As you may be able to imagine, I am quite distressed that my idea will never get off the ground - but I have looked through tutorials, stickes, examples - none of them have made any sense to me.

I'm willing to put in 200% effort and commitment to the project, all I need are people who are familiar with the process of making a Mod to help me get onto my feet, and allow me to develop it under my own steam. If anyone is willing to help, or point me in the right direction please let me know - I really want this project to work

If you want to know more about the project, please let me know and I'll be happy to explain anything :)

Please - somebody help me get this project started
Thanks

I guess it's time for Da Speech again.

Hi there, wanna-be game designer :-)

We, the Spring game development community, are here to help and support you. We'd love it if you made neat games with this engine. We're sure you have great ideas

That said... here are the realities you need to confront:

1. If you do not have real technical mastery of either code or low-poly character creation... you're SOL until you develop some skills.

I hate bursting people's bubbles like this, but it's just how things are. If you don't have any skills, you're not going to be able to do anything. Ideas are never enough.

2. If you have skills... great, we can work with that. List them, and let's see what we can do to steer you in the right direction. For example, are you a coder? Great, let's get you into learning about BOS, which is basically a bastardized, dumbed-down C. Are you an artist? No problem- let's talk about .S3O, send you towards some tutorials, etc.

However... if you don't have any skills, you need to decide whether the Coder path or Artist path would be a better fit for you, and then... well, ask a lot of stupid questions, work hard, and eventually it'll work out (that's my philosophy, anyhow).

Basically, that's all there is to this. If you're stuck because you don't have any skills, and cannot relate to the tutorial materials we have here, because you don't have the right context... well, then you need to start with the basics and work from there. Anybody can do this stuff... it's mainly a question of work ethic, not talent.

general information on getting started

The best thing to do is is try and start you project by getting one unit ingame. That should have you started. Hmm as far as a base project, you can use this. it is an old project and you can steal effects and stuff out of it. The aircraft I have said is PD(which means you can have it I don't care) so you can take that for whatever reasons.

As far as scripting almost all the projects have files in them that can read from and learn. Asking questions also helps. Stuff like how do build a script in scriptor, we have a wiki also with ample information regarding unit tags.

I hope all this helps.

Oh and be sure to never listen to Argh, that guy's so full of false information it can and will waste a lot of your time while you wonder WTF is going on.

Yes, never listen to me, I make cool games but I'm totally clueless otherwise, and it's an eternal mystery as to how I can even tie my shoelaces

outside of the complicated scripts most stuff is simple and many things have already been done and you can use them fine. Getting that first unit in game, that fissure thing is the most simplified base that I could give you. Do feel free to bug me if you have questions about it. I made most of that stuff a long while back, if you get any errors, let me know and I'll correct them and post an updated project so can start clean slate.

also try to post some of your work on the forum (pictures) so people can suggest improvements about (fail grammar?) your work.

I know I got a lot of false information from the crap you claim before I learned to ignore it and judging by the posts you make in the dev forums it's indeed a miracle that you get anything to run.

Give the man a break, at least he's learning. The hard way, sometimes, but that's still better than most people 8)

Actually, everyone is wrong, no one and nothing is user-friendly. Just write up all your ideas, and ill tell you what ur doing wrong.

I'm just warning our newbie here that Argh tends to give out false advice to save him a lot of hair pulling later on. Argh sounds very convincing and knowledgeable but when you try that knowledge there tend to be some very serious errors and finding those wrong bits is very hard for a newbie.

There is Silence on the other End.. stalinorgeled to Death with good Advice... yes, the Dream is smoking, eat this, and this, of course we can help you - to help yourself. Yeah, another Tutorial-Hit... okay Artilleryduell is offically over if the Victim doesen´t reply inpost for 24 hours..

Funny how all those hardworking real Modmakers always find the Time to Noobash Ideaposters- you don´t like your own beginnings. And how you can be tempted into Rage&Flamez by the "Can-you-do-it-for-me-it-merly-may-take-a-minute-to-do-that-Mod"! Guess this Thread could become ITER if everyone posted just-one-Mod-idea.. ;)

It's one of the threads that needs no sticky.
