installing spring on windows (if installer fails)

If the windows installer fails to download maps and mods which you need to run spring you will need to install them manually. Getting them yourself is no big deal but the installer gives no indication when it fails.

-----

WINDOWS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. install spring with the installer as normal (make sure to include Easy Content Installation.. this is very useful)

2. download a mod (I suggest BALANCED ANNIHILATION 6.21 if you want to start playing online) and open it with the default program. It will be put in the right place (this is what the Easy Content Installation does).

3. download a map (any map will do for now).. again the easy content installation will put it in the right place when you open it.

download mods and maps from these sites:
http://spring-portal.com/
http://spring.jobjol.nl/

4. now run TasClient, set up an account and you are in the multiplayer lobby where you can see and join online games and ask for assistance.

5. If you get a 'Missing Default Cursor' error this is easily resolved. Check the faq here >>

Huh, I had thought the installer was fixed to point at a new source for those files already... I'd add a direct link to the "tacontent" in case people try to get any of the TA based stuff...

I wish people would respond to the replies we give them to indicate that our advice didn't help... but I do apologize we weren't more help.

...

...

actually, now I recall... when I made those screenshots I tested the installer... and then I did it again now and it still works... downloads fine... it should throw an error if it fails probably though.

I installed it a couple weeks ago. The thread I read with a person who seemed to be having a similar problem was started 5 days ago.. so if its since then you can probly ignore me... or maybe they did do it wrong.

I've got 0.76b1.. same version as current
Maybe its intermittent? Ideally should alert when download fails but not abort the installation.

problem was that the server side redirect was pointing at the wrong place at that time I believe.

Installer is working fine for me, though the evolutionrts.info is really slow atm so I am removing it until it works better. That leaves the current mirrors as:

Code: Select all

spring.clan-sy.com
springmirror.jonanin.com
spring.darkstars.co.uk
I can only say that the problem is on your end. Unfortunately, if the installer fails to download one file, it aborts the whole download process (and I'm not sure how to make it not do that). Maybe check you didn't block the installer from connecting with a firewall or something like that.

Also, if anyone else has mirrors they would like to donate, I simply need a limited access ssh account on your Linux server with a web viewable folder.

Can we limit the monthly bandwidth that will be allocated to our server?

What is the average monthly bandwidth drain from the servers that are registered in the downloader?

I guess you'll have to tweak the redirecting PHP script then, atm it isn't that advanced ;-)

Download speeds fixed!

YAY!!! As some of you prolly know, a while back our webhost had some serious issues with a server cluster they had bought. Long story longer, they started offloading data onto other clusters. At that point our DL speed dropped to like 30kbps├óÔé¼┬ª It was bad.

As of yesterday, all that has been fixed. You can expect anywhere from 3 to 5 mbps download speeds now!
So you can probably readd it now.

Can someone or many someones please got to evolutionrts.info/maps (or /mods) and just randomly dl some stuff and report here what speeds they are getting?

I'm having to worst trouble pinpointing wtf is going on.

I just tested. The download speed is currently very unstable for me on your site, between about 16KB/s and 100KB/s. Average speed must be something like 40KB/s.

I thought so... Apparently I'm the only customer with this problem. Or so dreamhost customer support says.

I'm starting to get frustrated with this whole thing. Borked servers is not what I paid for.

Edit: I would really appreciate it if all of you who read this thread do what biblm did and report speeds. That way I can point dreamhost support at this thread and say "See?".

No the server load is minimal at best.

Well tom, the reason I went with dreamhost is because Tobi mentioned it as an alternative. I figured that if he did that then they were probably good.

Downloaded a 29MB file to test it.

Min speed: 75 KB/s
Max speed: 134 KB/s
The speed stayed around ~85 KB/s for a while, then went up to ~120KB/s for a while, then down to ~100KB/s for a while.

I'll do another test for you later.

We have no idea. If you wanted to be dropped from the mirror list because you're bw was getting low, that is very easy to do, but no way to set an arbitrary limit.

DL starts at ~200kbs then all the way down to ~20kbs with some full stops.

Could it at least warn the user if the installater doesn't install mods/maps successfully? Maybe a bit more useful information on the 'download' page (surely this should have links to everything needed to play the game). Another thing.. should the tasclient really need a map + a mod installed to run?

All these things combined made the whole process very frustrating for me.

I'd like to make some of those changes, but there are a lot of limitations on what you can do with NSIS.
