Spring sometimes freezes

While playing a game (irregardless of mod) sometimes everything will freeze (including other windows) and after a few seconds the whole GUI will reload itself from scratch (terrain, trees, units, etc.) and the game will resume.
And sometimes windows will just blackscreen and I'll have to reboot manually.
I'm running p4 2400, win xp sp2, geforce 4 ti4200 with the latest nvidia drivers.

When did it start happening? Was it always like that?

No, not always, I think it started happening with one of the spring updates during the spring (I haven't played in quite a few months now). I don't think it was the nvidia drivers since there haven't been any new ones for over a year now.

The last forceware release was dec 19. Which was two weeks ago. And he's talking about the drivers for his
geforce 4, as you would have known had you completely read his posts...nvidia hasn't released new drivers for those in ages.
