Unsafe account?

Post by Cheery »

Hi

After registering into this forum, 9.5.05, I received huge amount of spam and ebay registration corfirmations into my account I were registered with, but I haven't been shown my reg. account at public on this forum. I don't think you people would do something nonimportant as spamming is, but I believe you have a bug or something which gave my email-adress for unauthorised people to use it into their dirty needs. I wish you ask this from person who keeps the server. This makes me wonder if my another information I inputted into this account gone into unwanted use.

I haven't received any spam.

Too late for you, but do you know that when editing your profile, you can choose to let your email public or not?

When using the internet, refrain from providing information whenever you can. Trust me. Its safer that way.

Do you see my gmail account anywhere there?
you only see my hotmail. I registered with gmail. This is just the thing what I am wondering.

I don't see why I should hide my email-accounts, how can anybody contact me if I don't allow people to see that. It's only a secondary problem if somebody is enough idiot to spam into it. Oh well, I'm happy because mostly it detects the spam nowadays.

I just were curios where the auto spam program could have been got that email account.

That was an insult, I don't like when people writes for me like that.

I don't think it's from the forum itself, but which another thing, trojan or something else on server that could send the account information for unwanted people? That email account was almost unused( two post sent for a friend 6 months ago... ) and never before it has been received spam, I didn't put able to show it on this forum. So it must be the registering into this forum which launched the spam.

It must be real coincidence if the spamming flood and the account registration for this forum have nothing connectivity. After getting spam inside few hours from registering and found out that somebody has been registered into ebay with my email?

It may be it were coincidence, but please check out this:

Code: Select all

You have successfully added a new email address Spam

eBay
<accounts@ebay.com> to me
More options 1:46 am (12 hours ago)
Warning: This message may not be from whom it claims to be. Beware of following any links in it or of providing the sender with any personal information. Learn more
You have added phoneseller@yahoo.com as a new email address for your eBay account.

If you did not authorize this change or if you need assistance with...
It pushed this kind of post for me after registering, and is pushing more whole time, now google is pushing them into trashcan while they are thrown at my post, so it really doesn't harm me, but it is not a nice thing.

Try register yourself, it may be that it does that for everyone, the posts seems generated.

Also it's not there, all virus and bot scanners I runned finds nothing from my comp, its water-clean!

I could also be quiet and forget whole TASpring project, it does well anyway and the developers are super perfect and doesn't make mistakes, or at least this is what you think, until something worse happens... :|

Well, what do you say? I can leave the forum if you wish.

I know that my gmail address gave me lots of spam, from people that used approximation of my name, and that it started a while after I registered it. Is the address in the To: field of the mail exactly yours or just an approximation? Do you have a fairly common name as adress?

I don't think the spring forums brought any spams (save the "New Private Message has arrived") simply because I haven't received any spam with the address I registered on it with. And it's unique, thanks to spamgourmet.com.

Maybe if everybody could post in this thread whether or not they started receiving spam after registering in Spring forum we could see if it's me who escaped spammage throught incredible luck, or if it's you who blame Spring for a coincindence.

About spam,

I know that there are people that surf the internet, including forums like this one, searching for whatever e-mails they can find. Then, when they have large lists, they sell them.

What we should do is make they're lives harder.
Wherever you have to present your e-mail, instead of putting
mail@domain.wt
put:
mailAtDomain.wt
or,
mail at domain dot wt
or, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

That will make those guys life so hard (having to edit every single mail), that they will eventually leave that job/hobby or at least, severely limitating they're capacity to gather e-mail addresses.

About beeing spammed, i also am registered here and haven't started to receive spamm...

Hey! That's excellent idea in global world, still changing the at and dot -word slightly every time making it damn nasty, like this: mail a domain dt wt, mail a_t domain d.o.t wt, mail.domain@wt, everyone would use unique style so in best cases they couldn't write the program which reinterprets the mail account into a real one.

Thought the account which got the spam, were the account which I used to register into this board, I didn't allowed people to see it plus the only activity with that account has been registering into this messageboard. That's why I even bothered you with this thing. Or where do you find this account in my profile? henry_tuh... at gmail d.o.t com.

Edit: I forgot, I begun to use newsgroups with that account two days - week before I registered into there. So it possibly is not came from there. Still the possibility it came from there is not closed.

Ok now I am annoyed, firstly catalytic prefect, that was uncalled for. It sets a very bad example to the rest of t he forum.
Also notice that immediately before that post is a post of me with the
'mail at domain.com ' thing that seems to have gone unnoticed.
Cheery, it is extremely unlikely that Fnorida would run a server and end up with Trojans on it, do you think the spring dev team would have people who where so stupid when it came to simple security?!

I think that there's a possibility this forum IS where the spam is coming from, I blame the spammers who have posted threads as guests before and started threads about me and others to offend. I think you're a target because of the outrageous bug thread in the dev forum you started, you certainly seem to have ruffled catalytic prefects feathers, who knows how many more out there.

I see, when thinking about it. But say, how did they got the address? Try search my profile, and you see that you can find only my hotmail address from there. I haven't changed the settings.

I have been wondering the morale behind spamming in general never finding the answer into it. It must be something I don't understand.

I think now later what I wrote, and I think I shouldn't have been wrote that, at least in that form where I wrote it. I think I really should go and apologize you people, I feel I touched the personal case but I really didn't wanted to make everybody angry at me. :|

I feel really stupid because I remember I heard somewhere that these people are really older and more mature than I am. Heh. I still hit my head into stone even I were warned, typical me. I talked from them like I would be the god or something. Really childish.

But still I'm going to make the testcases because I still want to get better and stumble with every kind of code, and want to help the spring community more while beta release is tracking bugs. Many heads is better than many heads minus one.

I just received a spam, written from sanfcd@hotmail.com, in Spanish (or portuguese, I don't know), and I am sure the address was got from this forum, as it uses the spamgourmet alias I used to register here. Maybe it's just a bot that ripped it from the profile page, but still, it shows that Cheery was right.

i'm getting a TON of emails in german and dutch myself. alot are from email accounts i usually receive emails from (like vt.edu addresses), which is just spoofed. i notice a box pop up in my taskbar at the bottom of the screen from time to time, so i wonder if i have a virus or a trojan contacting out and asking for more mail... all my spyware/adware/virus scanners see nothing though... time to put my software firewall back up :(
