I'm kinda split on the subject... maybe if they put seal meat in hot-dogs and didn't tell me about it I would be more prone to eat it... As a Canuck, I feel really bad about not wanting to eat seal meat... and in general I'm against the killing of animals JUST for fur when synthetic replacements are available.
And then, its weird, theres this part of me that really respects the poultry industry for being so incredibly efficient.

I find it hard to understand that people just don't get that the issue is how the seals are killed. Instead, they always throw the "they are stupid because they are against it just because they are fluffy". I don't really understand if it is plain stupidity or if it is intentional to try and manipulate the reasoning into it's own benefits.
Caydr wrote:... There's a perception about the word "club" that brings to mind barbarians and uncivilized... conduct. But if it's the most effective tool for quickly and painlessly killing an animal, what better tool to use? ...
That is just fucking retarded. Quick and painless kill? Most certainly you people never seen footage of the act. Many animals don't even pass out with the clubbing. A whole many more don't die. Most probably, none of you guys ever seen a seal with no skin and a trail of blood behind it, from the place where it was skined to the place where it managed to crawl before death. Most probably none of you ever seen footage of seals having they're sking+fat beeing removed while they are alive and twiching.
But, yes, why should we care for any other being that is capable of feeling? Why should i care about the seals? In fact, why should i care about anyone?
Just because someone with the general inability to feel bad about the suffering of others is a psycopath to a lesser or greater extent?
But, wait, there are other things that are bad too. Where was my mind? That obviously makes the whole subject acceptable.

pigs are smarter than dogs...
but people do not feel sorry for something that looks like this:
Hang on while I look at your post with cynicism paul, because I don't believe you honestly feel THAT strongly. If you did you would be in a constant state of sadness and obviously you are not.
There are tons of AWESOME animals that are being pointlessly killed but people only get all butthurt BOO HOO about the cuddly ones.

The name of the thread is, "Is it wrong to kill cute animals, for food and clothing?" This is a clever way of phrasing "Do you care about animals that are killed if they're not cute?" Basically, do you have less sympathy for fish, pigs, and cows that are slaughtered than you do for cats and dogs who are slaughtered, in China for instance.
Obviously the answer is yes, which is intended to remind you of the fact that you're all a bunch of giant hypocrites, so you should piss off and stop judging things that you don't understand from other cultures. That is, unless you intend to "liberate" Canada next.
Argh wrote:There isn't a lot of demand for seal-meat, so killing seals is very wasteful from a holistic, "use the entire buffalo" POV.
That's why we only kill a quarter million of them. Did you actually research this statement or just assume that since you've personally never seen a sale on seal meat that nobody eats it?
Yes, there are hunters who don't obey the rules. If there is an industry where justice and morality are the top priority, please introduce me to it.
Congratulations on finding a video of something controversial, your next lesson will be to find out what a meme is.
You posted a video from the humane society's web page. And it feels that the treatment of animals is inhumane! Quick, someone make a society for it! Oh, it already exists, thank goodness, we can just donate and surely 97% of our money won't go to administration fees.
Unfortunately the entire internet cannot be accepted as fact at face value, and the actions of one individual do not represent the actions of another individual or of an industry as a whole.
In 2005, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) commissioned the Independent Veterinarians Working Group Report. With reference to video evidence, the report states: "Perception of the seal hunt seems to be based largely on emotion, and on visual images that are often difficult even for experienced observers to interpret with certainty. While a hakapik strike on the skull of a seal appears brutal, it is humane if it achieves rapid, irreversible loss of consciousness leading to death."
Is it taken out of context? Does it actually represent the WWF's feelings on a matter? Who cares, research is hard, I'll just post it.

I think that killing seals primarily for their fur, or any animal for that is wrong. Having said that if they're killed for other reasons such as culling them because they're overpopulated and competing for food we eat too e.g. fish then I can handle that. There have been talks of badger culls in the UK for similar reasons of transmission of bovine Tuberculosis for a while now.
And most people would agree, despite wearing leather. The sorts of things paulomorfeo mentioned about skinning them alive and them still moving and twitching while they're being gutted for meat/fat/fur is horrible and unnecessary, something no animal should go through.

I didn't realise cultural relativism was popular on this forum! We really shouldn't care about violations of human rights in other countries either, because IT'S THEIR CULTURE!
(i kind of doubt you really think this)
Also anybody who doesn't care about non-"cute" animals - or who doesn't think pigs are cute - has a childish outlook on life.
