Your favorite old games might be good, but what about all the shit games that ALSO existed?
good/bad game ratio does not matter, just the absolute number of good games. "Good" being different from person to person ofc.
Many of the genres I liked are pretty nonexistent or totally dumbed down nowadays.
Yes.
And for consoles, I only ever cared about them for splitscreen multiplayer which is now dead.

the older elderscrolls games were equally crap.
the older rpgs were equally crap, yeah I remember xcom and fallout, I played them and thought they were dull, planescape was a better later title but still sucked etc.

How many kids these days will ever try to play Secret of Mana? Chrono Trigger? Or even Diablo 1? Will they ever know the joys of all those prequels to titles they are playing now? They think Fallout 3 is a classic, but they have never tried Fallout 1 or 2. Gaming is all about the latest.

correct, look it was a struggle for me to play wc1 but honestly I grit my teeth and played it after completing wc2. that was when I was a teenager.

odds are those older games might not even play on thier current system. I am still mad I cannot play cavewars without using that utter crap dosemu thing.

Fact of the matter is we cannot expect them to. That is why games have backstories. Hell when we were kids we all watched starwars and it it was ok to not know how gay anakin was. Now we are older got the prequel and regret it :P

So how about legacy of kain? was a piss poor topdown game but soulreaver was pretty cool.

smoth wrote:"but there is no innovation" yep, because gamers are always new. There is always a fresh new batch who has not played that game yet. Anyone who thinks pc gaming is greater than console gaming or that old games are better is a fool. Old games are better because we forget about the plethora of asstarded games that also existed, ET anyone? Point is that say like the 9001 fps games. well after 4 years, expect to see the current generation of new gamers say that the old days were better blah blah blah. Then there are the posers who push retro gaming all the time in an attempt to be trendy or cool. Now we have a slosh of "indie" FGGTS who think they are hip because they got in on the "ground floor" of a hit game back when it was new. They are also the FGGTS who hate a game once it becomes successful.

Your favorite old games might be good, but what about all the shit games that ALSO existed? You are ignoring that. Sure some people think japanese games are on the decline, because we are seeing more of their full range now. Before we only saw the really good ones. Megaman, mario etc all greats but they were topshelf I could bet money there were absolutely abysmal nintendo games from japan back in the day.
Yes, about those crappy old games...

well spring is an awful example...

we see a lot of great mods are being developed for free for commercial engines...i hate to oversimplify it(mostly becasue i have no idea what they are doing) but dont all the foss people have to do is make quality/well documented engines

also, when/if the game industry dies(god i hope it dose)...everyone will have acess to all the engines(they will be less anal about ip enforcement)...i know that everyone in the world is all like progressprogressprogressprogressprogressprogress, but i dont see the point...i say enough, we have shinny models and shadows...what more do we fucking need...i mean we already have everything we already know, all we might be loseing is what might come some day maybe...and i don't think that it is that great to begin with...alot of "progress" has has alot of back draws

also corporations look for profit by definition, regardless of makeing good games or not...you are foolish to expect otherwise

(i am oblivoiusly motivated by my political aligences here)

Spring is a bad example of an open source project.

Look at something like wikipedia, gcc, apache or Linux instead. Much better than commercial products, in fact so good that they are used in many commercial products.
