The trick is the same as in f3: dont do the main quest but do the side quests first.
I also applied a stutter fix that is a d3d9.dll that you put in the game folder.
Now I have 2xAA and 16x aniso in 1680X1050 with my not so new gfx card
and 40-50- 70 fps everywhere.
I didnt try following the main plot cause its boring as fuck.
I had zero stuttering...this is of course with the second update installed.
game works fine on top gfx(on my average system) but does look a bit old graphically but i wouldn't care a bit about it if the world was at all convincing.

Did you do the one with the ncr general who sent out false information?
Its the one that impressed me most.

Nude Mutants. Oh, how i waited for that cancerous skin to show. Your horny skin makes me horny, your third eye watching me every step.
Srsly, Nude Patches and good gaming avert each other

About vats, I really hated it in f3. In NV it's imo borderline useless, which is fine by me. In f3 I used vats in almost every encounter, in NV only if someone is already weakened and in melee range so I can quickly neutralize him (the game still pauses for the shot). Im not sure if you are still invulnerable, that was the silliest thing about it. Well maybe as silly as shooting 3 shots with bolt action rifle while the rest of the world is in slow motion and can shoot maybe 4 shots with full auto weapons... Which doesn't matter anyway 'cause you are invulnerable in vats (unmodded).
Also most stuff is interchangeable with f3 and there's already a ton of mods. I even managed to port my f3 character face with f3 facegen exchanger and hex editor.
VH HC mode is quite nice, sort of like f3 with several realism/difficulty mods on. The game spawns too much ammo and supplies though. Would be really awesome if the player had to craft meds/ammo instead of finding them in virtually every little shack.

In stalker cop you never have enough ammo and you cant repair your weapon yourself, so most of your rubels are spent in ammo and repairs.
I dont like that, I rather have too much ammo like in NV.
But what would make NV better are stalker's weapon modifications

After playing it for hours i still haven't noticed i was playing in hardcore mode...
Also, the whole karma thing is retarded...
Stealing shit gives you bad karma?how about just not allow a player to steal easily by natural means...how abut not having ammo and supply crates lying around in every corner...game is beyond retarded.
I remember you could get a reputation for being a grave digger...that was actually interesting...
Why not at least try and make a living world?make some stuff time dependant..make events happen without you being the sole catalyst for the entire world....a least not have critters just roping in the same spot for the entire game like its a god damn mmo..
I mean this is 2010 cant they at least do SOMETHING new and impressive aside from abusing the fallout name.
I have an urge to make a strangth and survival character and just massacre all the game's characters for being so dull.

In ancient times there were diffrent difficults, but then some missguided parents decided to protest against those terrible diffident cults and everyone had to beat every game on nightmare from that day on. The noobs came like the worms over a corpse, but they didnt cause the death.

Can you change it to HC when youre in the game allready because I think its too easy for me now.
yes you can you just won't get the "achievement" for having it on the whole time. I started with it on and because it was so easy I realized I was on normal so I bumped it up to hard but I think I'm going to bump it up to very hard because I've got a bajillion stimpacks, ammo, sasparillas, nuka-colas, etc... that I just don't ever use.
I'm going to have to try out that .dll patch because my game has been very laggy/stuttery and I have very decent graphics card (my cpu is only dual 2.4 but above minimum)
Lots of things could have been better -- I like that they took ideas from mods of fallout3 but imo they weren't implemented nearly as well as community mods (which were spectacular).
Melee is huge disappointment -- it is exactly the same as F3, although you can throw knives/spears/hatchets/etc... but they are one shot; you can't pick them up again >:/ hopefully someone will make some mods to fix this.
The radial ally dialogue is huge improvement. I don't have to go through a bunch of dialogue just to open companions' inventory and load them up like a packmule anymore. (a lot of times I want to go solo because my companions kill everything before I get to, but they do save me ammo/weapon condition while still giving xp so they get to stay my mules)
Gameplay is almost exactly like Fallout3 (closer to modded fallout 3). Lots of recycled content (added in lots of new stuff as well). So if you liked the one, you'll probably like the other. Its definitely not a bad game, but an FPS is of course going to be different then an Isometric TBS.
PS: what the hell is up with the karma system? I've never killed anybody good or done anything remotely evil but yet I'm "very evil" because I took a few piles of ammo lying around? (maybe more than a few -- I'm a kleptomaniac but still...)
Edit: Holy moly that dll worked wonders. thanks machete, now I can run at max settings :D

If you want a detailed world with lots of complex quests and decent writing, NV is clearly top class compared to any games. But if you expect some Jesus game yes you will be disappointed, it's still good for what it is.
Main flaw is having shitty FO3 combat though
