by raising the bar in terms of map visual quality to a very high level, it's tough for a rookie mapper to create something new that will be taken seriously; they may have the best idea in the world, but people will always scream about the texture.

knorke that post with the battle stats is very interesting... i wonder if i'd be able to somehow offset those common conflict zones via a strange layout

Gota, with ssmf and featureplacer, it takes a significantly long time to produce a quality map anymore. This is because the map format has gotten much much better and allows us to do things now that we only dreamed of long ago.

Smoths grts maps are the best thing since sliced bread. In evo, they are made of epic winsauce.

So you think its a tool problem?

Would be cool if the experts could make a definitive guide for all aspects including the new ones and all the possible programs you can use for each section etc..
It might help newbies.

The map options code I have been developing and improving with each time I release a map GREATLY expands the ability for a user to improve their maps. However they also add a lot of advanced options so I can see why that is frustrating for a new mapper who might not be able to handle simple code.

forb: you mean because standards have risen or because you find feature placer unwieldy?

FP is far from unwieldy, it's more because with the ssmf stuff, you have to spend double the time tweaking everything and tons of time getting every little detail perfect due to higher standards. I could make a regular joe schmoe smf map in an hour and have it look great compared to smf standards. With ssmf, it takes a considerably longer amount of time.

Also, with FP I tend to take a lot of time laying features, adding randomizers, etc, just because I want everything to look more or less perfect. I haven't released my ssmf of cai's revenge yet, but it looks amazing.

Yes...Need to unify it into a wholesome guide and put in the development tab.

making maps is not so rewarding now, because the only mod still really played is BA and the only map BA is really played on is DSD or comet

There are S44 games every day, I believe, though I don't come online daily. NOTA probably gets play as well.

That said, I agree to some extent on the map-reward point.

everything that could have been done, has been done.

Anything else i imagined, never looked like the pre-picture i had in mind for it, or was beyond my technological grasp (and/or) my will to spend hours on uninteresting refinements.

Although there is still this map of my dreams, well actually it is more sort of a mapycycle, morphing one map into another. It would start out on a lush, green, paradiselike planet, and when the war progresses, this planet is ripped into lava, and finally blown to shreds into a asteroid belt- and reassembled into a lush green world. Maybee one day i will live to see that done appropriate, whith orbital sugardrops rattling the crust of the battlefield, and k-bots marching over asteroids that still are covered with vacuumdried trees, grass and ash. Well, actually the creativity of maps is quite limited by the torturials and toolproofs you ve got to go through nowadays to be taken seriously. ;)
