That way losing a commander is a significant loss, without being game breaking. At the moment in a team game if you lose a commander without significant counterplay, it is basically game over. Unless you hand your units over first....
It might also be fun to allow a game mode were each team has only one 'true' commander and everyone else starts with a 'general' or something which is basically the same as the commander (but looks different). If the commander dies, it is game over for the whole team.
