Another major problem, I think anyway, is that height maps are too low resolution. I'd like to see them be 1/4 size or 1/2 size ideally (though I know 1/2 will probably never happen).

Like, when I take a heightmap that's 40,000 pixels wide (as I've mentioned, my source material is ultra high quality) and shrink it to something like 1500 pixels wide for Spring, what would normally be a nice rolling hill turns into a giant spike.

Yes, I could make the map have a lot more varied elevation, but what you'd get is a series of the aforementioned spikes. Even with only 200 elevation or whatever I've got it set for now, differences in height are very jagged.

No one was saying it was a poor effort, we know you put work into the thing. It's just that every earth map we've seen (the real earth in OTA, Buggi's east and west hemisphere maps in the old map format, hell, even those mars planetary maps we saw before, and so on) have just been substandard because of scale restrictions. They've been too flat and frankly too small for a region of the earth, and frankly yours shares the same fate. It's not because it's a bad effort, it's just because the engine can't really handle a proper planetary map yet.

If it's a map of the Earth, I want it to feel like I'm fighting over the entire planet, not just on a map that resembles it but is tiny and has poor relief. That said, I have nothing against maps of real world regions. Make a map of the British Isles (and probably the french coast). Make a map of your home state (province? I think you're a canuck, aren't you?). Make a map of some random Asian islands. Those would all be fine, if done well with proper relief and senses of scale. I just don't think the engine (or frankly, any mod) is ready for the scale required for a true, full planetary map.

Yeah, I suppose that's a possibility.

cant you blur the heightmap?
