I liked watching Hellsing and Shiki - the anime. Well, you said media.

it is incredible how those mainstream movies and music stays on top of the charts, while beeing watched by noone you know. Surely some selfish deception is at work...

Not really... people tend to be subconsciously self-selecting when they choose who to interact with regularly... there are exceptions like family or cases where you have relationships left over from a previous version of yourself or you share enough in common with someone to get along but differ greatly on other things... but, generally speaking, if you are the kind of person who doesn't like Twilight you are likely to be surrounded by the kind of people who don't like Twilight...

Actually both views are correct. Back when "going platinum" still meant something it was common for record labels to game the figures. Either they would ship more units than they expected to sell, buy back their own records or pad an album with extra discs (each disc in the box counts as an extra sale for some reason).

In an age where an iTunes download costs $1 and YouTube access is free would it really surprise anyone that record lecord labels would bulk-buy their own tracks and astroturf their artists videos, facebook and twitter accounts in order to create the illusion that Talentless Hack X is actually a popular or trending artist?

The latest sleazy trend is injecting coverage of crappy "talent" shows like Idol, X Factor, etc into news programs. As if the personal life of some unknown hack is somehow equivalent in newsworthiness to a plane crash or war.
