It's a very american thing. Indeed in France (and I suppose other european countries) we don't have popularity contest.

The sad thing is that because of all those american TV series, it's changing here too. Discussing with my niece I was horrified to realise popularity has started to become important in french's school as well.

english secondary schools have somthing similar to the american popularity contest, only with a greater emphasis on getting shanked and less correlation between sports and popularity

It's in-film advertising.
If you are a marketing person at a big company that makes shirts, what do you do? You work to make people buy *more shirts*. In this case through promoting peer pressure - and I would believe that this works better than you'd think.
