Kinda puts into perspective our government's actual commitment to even vaguely trying to not render earth inhospitable to our children/grandchildren doesn't it.KaiserJ wrote:what really kills me with this whole thing
the exact same thing has been going on, but worse, for years over in the shell oil fields on the niger delta. the only reason this is getting consideration is because its next to the USA, not some 3rd world country where it can easily be swept under the rug.

They started this relief drills only a few days after the sinking, the problem with the damaged original drill is newer though. At least new to the public.Hobo Joe wrote:Last I heard(yesterday) is that they are going to drill down 2.5 miles into the main pipe from different directions, then pump it full of concrete from there.
How about a lake (well, a concrete lake now) where the radiation will kill you if you stay > 1 hour?render earth inhospitable to our children/grandchildren

Not to even start with the "normal" wastefulness of ressources, if you do so you just get crazy.
Yes. Or even worse:the only reason this is getting consideration is because its next to the USA, not some 3rd world country where it can easily be swept under the rug.

I said something along these lines on unforumzed and was called a dick by the US forum posters

Not to disagree, but to be fair I think this one is worse.
Then again I honestly have no idea.

that made zero sense.Hobo Joe wrote:KaiserJ wrote:what really kills me with this whole thing

The Russians have been saying this from Day 1.
The nuke must be exploded underground:

So they must do a new drill anyway. They are already doing that but it takes months.
The fire of that gaswell might have been put out but some sources say it is still leaking gas out of the surrounding ground.
There is reports that the Deepwater Horizons well goes through multiple layers of oil bubbles, it might not seal. Also if the nuke does not work but instead just causes some random tectonic shifting the spill would become unstoppable.

This never would've happened if it was in the Gulf of AMERICA.

Re: Deepwater Horizon oil spill
Surely a nuke underwater would cause a bit of a tidal wave?

Knocking over moar Oilplattforms- that could be a nice domino-effect, and if everybody seabedwets himself with a darkfluid of unknown origin, nobody does, that is theeeee sollutionSucky_Lord wrote:Surely a nuke underwater would cause a bit of a tidal wave?

Not undersea, but underground on an island. Effects would be different with a large upward push on the sea floor.
The results from this would be interesting, yet the project was canceled before testing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_ ... %281958%29
There was also Operation WIGWAM with a deep sea nuclear device: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwater_explosion
But if it was at a significant depth beneath the sea floor the results would not be the same.
However none of this is taking into account the damage done to the oil trap, which as knorke said may cause leaks through fissures in the rock.

Re: Deepwater Horizon oil spill
You don't need a disturbingly massive nuke, and it's really really deep. It shouldn't do damage to nearby cities, they've tested much larger warheads than the type needed underwater before and the wave dispersed before it did any damage.Sucky_Lord wrote:Surely a nuke underwater would cause a bit of a tidal wave?
Re: Deepwater Horizon oil spill
The nuke alone would probally be not the problem but when pumping out oil the floor subsides slowly. iirc there the ground has lost 1 meter of height (or maybe that was some other place not sure) Well at least that can happen and a nuke might cause cave ins or landslips if the floor is already destabilized and thats not so cool then.

for 50 years..."more oil is spilled from the delta's network of terminals, pipes, pumping stations and oil platforms every year than has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico."
also keeping in mind that the people there depend completely on the environment for their income, food and water... go down to the river, pull up a bucket of water, skim the oil off the top, and drink it
nigeria as a whole does not profit from the extraction of oil; foriegn companies pay the corrupt local government for the right to extract oil
so not only are the environmental consequences much worse, there's also a huge issue of human rights violations and exploitation of the native people of the region
how many died in that oilrig explosion? 10? the last big boom in nigeria killed over 100 civilians
