it looks like you're only talking about singleplayer which I haven't played very far (got to the part where you assault fast food places IIRC) so the cheater problem and all the other flaws of multiplayer aren't relevant
Exactly. I don't even care about MP for this, for that, I just play UrT right now, until something comes along with that kind of gameplay and better graphics.
To the Quake-lovers... meh, I guess it's just a taste thing, but I like a game where speed and skill meet, and where jumping around like Mario on crack isn't a motif. I loved The Specialists, to put it another way- that was darn-near the perfect game for me, because I could kill 10 guys with the Glock and Taurus before getting pwned by some random sprayer or torn up by some slo-mo jujitsu artist. IOW, I'm not saying I like "realistic" FPS games, because I really, really don't- every time I play one, I can't resist being a bastard and playing it seriously, and then I kill so many nubs that I feel dirty afterwards. I just like one where your avatar's still fairly human in terms of what it's allowed to do, which is why I play UrT.
you seriously paid 60$ for it?
Yeah, I wanted a new game to play on this new computer, and I wanted it that evening, so voila, Steam, $60, no trip to the store or waiting. That means I get to play it one more evening, then get back to working on Spring stuff.

Just think how many starving africans could've been saved by that $60

Or more importantly how many other games you could have bought with the remaining cash.

And how many kittens and virgins Activision killed and raped with the profits you gave them.

In that order.
After playing CoD6 I couldn't help but feel I'd just played CoD4 again.

Sure, that makes it fun, however, it doesn't make it a great game. I've played many FPS games in my time, FPS is my favourite platform of game. I enjoy playing CoD and games like it. However, they lack one game virtue which drives me away from them. Skill.
It takes next to no effort at all to rack up a nice amount of kills in CoD, it takes no effort to pwn the best. Seriously, after a month or so of playing it you're pretty much pro...
Don't get me wrong, CoD is a really fun and well designed game, however, it's really not for hardcore gamers who wish to be "better" than anybody else.
I consider the best games the ones that require skill to play AND are fun at the same time.
Oh and also, you're very late on the scene here, MW2's been out for a while now

Have you played Tremulous?

Then give it a try, its sort of the game which you described in your post, allowing the person to become REALLY pro over time.
/me withdraws from the thread now.

Although I did say that I stopped offtopic in this thread, but I have to warn anyone who is attempting to play Tremulous : Stay away from X servers. Due to the server-side modifications, the server is effectivelly a noobtrap (worse than 8v8 DSD BA in spring).
If you are up to try an actual game, play on normal servers. Its hard to tell which ones are normal, but one springs to mind : Alcoholics anonymous, or AA. If in doubt check the forums.

knorke wrote:yea, its missions and objectives change during play of the map.
For example the map "Goldrush:"
Allies have to steal&escort a Panzer (it follows a path on its own whenever an allied soldier is next to it/on its machine gun) Axis try to delay the tank by damaging it (then it must be repaired) or by constructing roadblocks. (which then the Allies would have to blow up to let the tank past)
After a while, the tank arrives at a bank and destroy its door. Now Allies must try to load the gold CTF style on a truck and in the end escape with the truck.
ET: QuakeWars is the same, just taken to the future. Luuved it.

Last time I have checked it was something on the lines of blasters dealing 999 damage, granger spit bouncing off walls and dealing 999 damage, tyrants having 999 hp... it could have changed over time, but I doubt it became any better.

I tried Tremulous. It felt and looked really old but was still cool. Reminded me of basic Quake or UT ^_^

I mostly play Section 8 for FPS stuff. Combat feels more tactical because it takes so many bullets to kill an enemy (clicking on heads still helps but it's only a 25% bonus that a well timed evasive jetpacking could negate easily), you'll often have a fairly lengthy duel and you need to utilize the environment and your tools to gain the upper hand. The strategic situation tends to change a lot with sub goals popping up fairly randomly.

for me, my mission was always to try and get either the panzerfaust or the flamethrower or the mortar, and ignore what everyone else was doing in favour of levelling my boi
nothing quite like blasting the hell out of the opposing spawn and getting kills by the dozen when they have no recourse, with someone standing next to you throwing you more ammo so he can level his boi.
but yes. the missions, in a team game of over 30 players, really just dictates where you're running to next.
