Dear me, there are so many. I still play them, and add to my collection.
Faxanadu, Chrysalis, Life Force, Maniac Mansion, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden II, River City Ransom, Kirby's Adventure, Solar Jetman, Metal Gear...
And I discover more gems as the years pass, unlike my experience with newer consoles.

Super Dodge Ball

@SinbadEV
I mentioned it, actually.
@KaiserJ
Bionic Commando isn't that tough if you spend a half-hour or so on the first level grinding for health-cubes. Battletoads, on the other hand, is trial-by-fire.
Oh, and I assume that everyone's referring to TMNT2: The Arcade Game, not TMNT 1 which was made of fail and aids.

Battletoads was just stupid. SO ridiculously hard. Even with more than one person, it was just stupidly hard.

Actually, because there were some parts of the game that were nigh-impossible to complete with 2 players, apparently nobody really knew one little detail about the game: level 11 has an unavoidable crash-bug with 2 players.
That's how hard the game was - it had a fatal bug in 2-player mode, but it was so far into the game that nobody even knew about it.
Between this and the endgame stuff in Diddy Kong Racing, I've decided that RARE hates children.

I played A LOT of Blaster Master... I sucked at it but I kept at it and kept at it... and then finally gave up and put in Game Genie codes... and still sucked at it so much that I finally gave up... most NES titles were far too difficult for me to beat... which is definitely a point in their favor.

lol@blastermaster.
And who said NES games were too easy?
Couple more painful games:
And now, some real nostalgy:

even though that's SNES (and genesis, amiga, PC, etc)
I don't think there's even one NES game that I liked, well perhaps SMB2...

loved that game rattle; i think i played it first on a games system; but the mouse control really seemed to be best in retrospect. that game got fiendishly tough as well... i dont think i ever beat it.

i dont even like baseball; but baseball stars was awesome for the managerial / rpg sort of element.

remember how the graphics on NES would corrupt sometimes? cobra triangle was like that right out of the box. i nominate it as the glitchiest game.

solstice was a wheelbarrowload of fun also.
