Tyrian wins hands down, but Raptor had a cool easter egg kinda thing, if you installed the shareware distro, and kept it long enough, it started to spawn these nuts gorillas in all the woods, that rapid-fired high damage homing coconuts at you, effectively making it unplayable.
Not as fun and silly as the carrot ship, but still... imo its the kind of care and attention that i feel is missing from a lot of contemporary game developement

Don't get me started on Tyrian easter eggs. On the easter eggs and hidden bonus count, Tyrian beats any game I ever play.

I've never heard of Tyrian (2000) other than the name once or twice. It's much better than Raptor.

Anyway from what I've read the first level has three or four secret levels. I've gone to two at least (Jin Roh and some other). And the asteroid route goes through a series of secret levels if you do it right.

Raptor stinks once you have the laser IMO.

Oh yeah, banana bomb + teh juicer ftw.

DESTRUCT

I think the version I played (4 episodes) had only two secrets for the first level.

I was playing most of the later stages with maxed out lightning (front) and starburst (rear), I think my sidepods were plasma storms most of the time, I always keep at least one of those things around.

Tyrian 2000 has 5 episodes and with the patch there's one additional to the three bonus levels in the first level.
edit: 4 episodes, the 5th was made by someone else apparently... gah.

Here's how to get to them and about everything else.
Going to Roh Jin is recommended as you can buy the best shield in the game right before entering the level.

They aren't ultra hard core shmup where mispositionning by a pixel makes you have to restart all, ok. They're more about having fun and enjoying the mindless blasting without having to retry level 1.1 a hundred time. Though if you increase a bit the difficulty setting, ..

I don't like Tyrian 2000, I feel the added episode isn't respectful of the humor, quality, and universe of the original.

I tried once the lightening, but when maxxed they dropped any generator I had found to 0 in one or two seconds. So most of the time, I go laser front (the orange continous one), green wave thing rear, (but set in frontward firing mode), and zicca laser on the sides. But maybe that's more because they have pretty flashy shots than because of their power. I think the small whitish roundish with breads shot, that spread in more horizontal-going shots when hitting, don't remember the name, megapulse or something, I tried once was most powerful front weapon. And I used to have a FrontBlaster, normal or II, instead of dual side zica. I would have liked to have the little ships as sidekick, but sadly they aren't as powerful as some good zicca shot, so I only keep them until I find some better weaponary. But generally, I don't like sidepods with limited ammo.

Not having found all secrets doesn't mean they are not here. After all, they're secrets!
DESTRUCT
I've spend almost as much time in here than in the rest of tyrian. I love the radar dish thing and its blue shot that go straight and is reflected, I love the red rocket thing and its shots going from the small fast firing to the nuke, and I love the repulsor thing!

I quite liked the music from Tyrian. It accomplishes a lot with very little. Good video game music is tough to come by :)

I go with front either zica or beam laser, rear micro bombs or heavy bombs and sides 2x zica. I have to admit due to the lack of control to the bombs it's difficult to hit something to the sides at times.

Oh, anyone ever finished a level on suicide? Can't kill anything and can't dodge the shots either... so I die like all the time. :(

Tyrian was the second computer game I ever played, after Jazz Jackrabbit.

I always like the orange laser in the front, dual zica lasers, a sonic wave (switching between sideways and forward as the situation demands,) and the huge blue laser special ability thing.

I'm gonna have to go get dosbox for this laptop...

That video was sick. First game run I've seen on par with the HL in a half hour spiderwaffle run.

[edit] Now with more video linkage!
