Extremely slow USB file transfer speeds [Win7]

Post by Forboding Angel »

This is a well known problem, but lately it has been driving me crazy. I load up Ubuntu and usb transfer speeds are stupidly fast. I do it in winsucks and get this:

Hours upon hours of googling have led me to no real answers. using terracopy helped marginally (it's actually quite nice otherwise, so I kept it around).

Does anyone know of the fix for windows having stupidly slow usb transfer rates?

Same problem exactly as this guy: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/3266- ... -fast-read

I'll try total Commander

Just guessing, because I dont have Win7: It sounds as if the USB-device is mounted synchronously. I dont know where to change that (try device manager), but maybe google in that direction can help.
It's a security measure: if you pull the USB-stick w/o proper umount, sync would have written most data.

You're talking about performance mode vs blah blah. It's already in performance mode, and this is anything. Any of my flash drives, my portable HDD's, etc.

This has been an issue for a very long time (since I can remember), and the moment I boot up an ubuntu live cd (can't bother installing ubuntu under windows anymore with wubi considering that earlier today wubi nuked the win7 boot manager so completely that I spent hours fixing it), it goes fast as hell.

I'm rather annoyed by the fact that M$ won't fully acknowledge it (shocking amirite?), but the fact that no other os has this issue is a pretty glaring pointer.

Could be drivers, idd, but its a usb controller and ports... Where am I supposed to find super new ones? Computer tech that I am, its not often that I need to replace drivers on working usb ports.

Av isn't the cause. Tried that one already. And total commander is bleh. Windows explorer x2 + filemenu tools is much nicer. Also, tc didn't help xfer times.

Hmmm, Google needs to open up Google movies, so I can store all my downloaded movies and stream them to anywhere. Google music is quite excellent (tho I primarily use audiogalaxy)

should work (edit: this was for vista. no clue for 7)

1) windows + pause
2) device manager
3) universal serial bus controllers
4) find the one you want, right click, properties
5) under the drivers heading try "update driver"

possibly: pay attention to what it says under "Advanced" tab for bandwidth used... mine says 20% system reserved for my main USB bus with 18 devices; this means that i'm still getting 80% which is pretty decent. have a peek, maybe you've got an unusually high reserve

some ports have less system reserved though; namely the ones on the back of my PC have 10%... makes transfer slightly faster i guess

Nah, all drivers are "Up to date". Of course I could remove them, but what would be the point? Windows would just grab them from windows update again and nothing of value would have been obtained.
