My point was that you have big name titles like Halo and CoD, that appeal to a large number of people. I'm not talking about quality or what's good or bad, just that these are names that even people who don't consider themselves to like video games know and have probably played.

If anyone has some similar examples of big name titles from Western developers from, say, the '90's feel free to throw them out there.

SanadaUjiosan, are you trying to that until recently western companies had no huge mainstream successfull games? Because that seems very wrong Oo

uhm too easy?
-Doom 1+2
-Quake 1+2
-LucasArts games like Monkey Island
-Sim City
-Command and Conquer
-Duke Nukem
-Wolfenstein
-Warcraft, Starcraft, Diabolo
-Half Life
-Counterstrike
-The Need for Speed
-Wing Commander
...
All pretty big names everybody has heard. And thats only PC.
On the japan side:
-all the Mario, Donkey Kong etc stuff which is tons and madly popular.
-Gran Turismo
err uhmm err what else *think* *think*
-maybe fight games like Tekken etc. Though Mortal Kombat is western. Dont think fightgames are well known.
-Final Fantasy 1 to 9001
-tons of other RPG nobody knows unless they are a fan

So there is basically Gran Turismo, Mario and JRPG. wow.
Oh should have read thread before typing, it was already summed up:

Then again most western games are equally shit, just different shape. And remember most of the more niche jap stuff never gets translated. If comparing recent blockbusters its hard to say who's worse though

I think most women would find the wii commercial much more appealing than demolition racer..that's why wii was so popular you know, women thought it was cool.

hey fellas... http://www.4chan.org/v/ people will understand your woes and post sympathetic and understanding opinions!

Ok, joking aside. Acting like any one group of developers is great because x game was made there is silly.

CROATIAN DEVELOPERS ARE THE BEST! SERIOUS SAM WAS AMAZING~!

NO CANADIAN DEVELOPERS ARE THE BEST THEY MADE STARCRAFT!

STILL RONG!

Seriously, guys, japanese developers just have a largely different audience and culture it means the games are very different to the western games we play BUT we also have to consider that they are largely more of the same. Sure there is the occasional katamari damaci(sp) and americans occasionally create a spore. Both games are wierd and unusual but saying american game companies are shit because of fps games or japanese are bad because of turn based rpgs.... koreans are horrible for grindfest etc.

So you're saying that we can think japanese games are not fun, but we can't say they suck because there are some rare good ones? ok i'll buy that but then i'll just say that the majority of jap games suck.

I am saying that japanese games are not all the same thing. To say it is good or crap just because it is japanese is stupid.

nsfw
american sex game similar to sexy beach.

rapeplay was actually quite dull beyond the unique thing of knocking up the hostage. Artificial girl was better imo and the new sexy beach zero looks disappointing. Just saying.

Dunno, dont know any girl who owns a Wii. And the ones who join to play wii mario kart also play Bloodwaves on Xbox (some ship combat game, basically a Vigilante8 clone on water) I dont think male/female gamers are so different and other consoles have "girly" games too, ie little big planet, flower and this cat thing on ps3.
The wii is popular due to its nice casual image.
So it is bought by grandma's with some crapgames like "my first virtual pony" for their grandson "because he wanted a videogame and this one looked fun and not so violent."
Seriously, the wii games are like some techdemo from a computer expo/mess of the year 2000. Not made to be a good game, just made to show the "lolol i shake this thing and computer reacts to it" feature. Only reason why this is played longer than 30 minutes is peer pressure or w/e. This "party console" thing is the second part of its imagine srslywtf.
the new sexy beach zero k looks disappointing. Just saying.
Nah, you should get new version from rapid, UI is all chili now and you can morph the commander.

well the Japanese are weird about that, again, have to consider the culture and what the games of that culture reflect. America likes gradtheft auto, selling drugs, prostitutes and murder... just saying.

The problem comes from the disconnect. Corporations want to raise profit instead of maintain profit levels. So they trying keep what works and then strip it to as small as they can and make profit off that.

"but there is no innovation" yep, because gamers are always new. There is always a fresh new batch who has not played that game yet. Anyone who thinks pc gaming is greater than console gaming or that old games are better is a fool. Old games are better because we forget about the plethora of asstarded games that also existed, ET anyone? Point is that say like the 9001 fps games. well after 4 years, expect to see the current generation of new gamers say that the old days were better blah blah blah. Then there are the posers who push retro gaming all the time in an attempt to be trendy or cool. Now we have a slosh of "indie" FGGTS who think they are hip because they got in on the "ground floor" of a hit game back when it was new. They are also the FGGTS who hate a game once it becomes successful.

Your favorite old games might be good, but what about all the shit games that ALSO existed? You are ignoring that. Sure some people think japanese games are on the decline, because we are seeing more of their full range now. Before we only saw the really good ones. Megaman, mario etc all greats but they were topshelf I could bet money there were absolutely abysmal nintendo games from japan back in the day.

As far as PC vs console, get over yourself. People always argue to defend their idiotic monetary dump. Me? I was a pc gamer in the 90s because I was poor. As soon as I got a real job, I bought a ps3, wii and had an xbox so don't start a console bias argument as my pc cost more than all 3 easily.

No, definitely there was more good games coming out before. Todays trends are just much shittier as far as I'm concerned. Many of the genres I liked are pretty nonexistent or totally dumbed down nowadays.

Not comparing the ratio of good games to shit ones, but if you look at cool games that came out in say, 98, theres a lot more of them than in 2010. That's just my opinion of course, todays console kids might prefer their CoDs or Oblivion or whatever even if they got to try the good old games.
