Grands Rapids Chalk Flood Event looks like so much fun!

People of all ages can attend and be creative too! Some of the the artists that are there are very talented. Look at the cute sea turtle that looks like it's going to jump out of the sidewalk and swim away:





I always thought that graffiti looked interesting, but just look at how talented people can be when they all get together and decided to decorate 3 miles of sidewalk with their drawings. If I were to participate in this event I'd draw an optical illusion that looked like a hole in the sidewalk.

Also some of those chalks are so beautifull, it brings you to tears to think they are not permanent.

The problem with streetart is, that many of them get paid by advertisement, so even this amazing stuff is (unlike graphiti; for now) invaded by comercialism. Well, they have to live from something.






I think its at is best, when it shows you the hidden layers (beneath the city, stuff You and i take so much for granted) or make you stop and think. Just the 3d effect for itself is not worth that much.

I haven't seen any street art over here that was made to advertise for anything even though they may be some somewhere, but those are some very pretty drawings.

I think that part of what makes chalk drawings so neat is that they are temporary. You are lucky enough to appreciate them for the moment when you and it happen to be there, then you would go about your business and it will be eventually washed away in a stream of colors.

I agree with you that it would be fun to see a drawing that revealed what was under the city. I guess it would be interesting if something was put in a drawing of a hole in the sidewalk like a nutria rat, a turtle, an alligator, aquifers, rivers, or you could just put a "watch your step" sign by it and watch people laugh at the drawing as they walked by.

the perspective thing... a long time ago i painted this archway leading out into a garden at the end of his apartment hall after seeing some of this chalk artwork in my city

apparently it was good enough that this drunk girl actually believed that he had a balcony garden thing after a glance, which in turn was good enough to get him laid

so yes, i think it is worth doing, even if purely for the 3d effect.

That belief that the painting was that good sounds kind of silly.

Scientific experiments say that briefly touching someone on the shoulder, even if they don't notice it will cause them to rate a picture as more likable and not that the picture was actually that great or had that much of an effect on the person. However, I think that in the instance with that girl it was probably more an issue of how much alcohol she had consumed and whether or not she thought that the guy was hot at the time. Was the guy drunk to, though?

I used to hand out chalk at protests in London. A really cool policeman came up to me and kindly informed me it was illegal and some police would be really arsey about it, he just suggested I didnt put any more "FREE CHALK" huge arrows/footprints etc down.

Later in the march same guy found me writing in the middle the road at Picadilly Circus and just laughed at it, let me go on my merry way.

That boat picture in Picasso's post is amazing btw :D
