High School Memories thread.

Post by dizekat »

spin-off from Qatar offtopic thread about nerd popularity in schools and school stories. Post your HS stories here, troll about education in other countries, troll about nerds, etc.

theres mine:

I was in science/engineering oriented HS in Moscow, actually just 7th and 8th grade, then left and just did exams. The school was 1.5 hours by public transport away and Moscow public transport is very packed with someone breathing right into your face, so I was getting sick with flu several times a year and it was totally miserable (and I like Lithuania way more).

We had 3 girls in class of 25 or so. I was in top 3 at gym classes[edit: to clarify. I was average or somewhat worse than average in elementary school, but this particular highschool had particularly nerdy kids], and I was best in the class at physics and geometry. I was kind of popular, my group of friends were coolest guys in the school, etc. I did a lot of physics demonstrations for class (helping the physics teacher), and the cool thing about those is that them are mostly dangerous and so they do not make you look like a nerd. Scientists are cool guys when they make kaboom or work with high voltage, as opposed to other future scientists in that class whom do not make kabooms. Plus when you are doing demonstrations for public, you are the confident guy.

Not that I could have used it. Those schools are so prudish. Only once when lessons got cancelled me and my friend and 2 girls had a class room to ourselves (girls somehow got the key lol), and i think it was in 7th grade (barely 14 years olds) so all we did was flirting and girls giggling and girls dancing while telling us not to look (but we looked through reflection in glass cabinet). It was risky, too.

The only two guys in the class who got "laid" while I was there was some gay (masculine gay, #1 at gym, total asshole, quite unpopular) with another gay (feminine gay, worst at gym, total sleaze and coward) in the room where we kept cold weather clothes. Masculine one got expelled for that. The feminine one didn't get expelled. I did actually feel sad for the strong gay, at least he wasn't total sleaze. I think feminine one backstabbed him in some way, like, claimed that he was intimidated or something.

Ahh and the second gay was kind of friends with me for first 2 months but left me... [Bwaaa, nice guys don't get boys, someone start a thread please.]

So that's basically all the interesting HS experience i've had.

edit: making it clearer what the thread is about.

In russia the smartest kids are the popular ones? wow, so different to england :P ive spent the last 7 years of my education hiding my intelligence so as to not be ridiculed!

Im in my last year of college studying maths chemistry physics and further maths, having dropped biology at the end of last year. it takes me about an hour to get into college each day. Our trains arent that packed but i cant remember the last time a train was less than 15mins late. Its shocking how bad they are D:

In terms of gym class I was always really bad until a few years ago where i started coming into my growth and finding my agility allowed me to surpass many of my peers. Im top in maths, physics and further maths but ive always found chemistry harder(which is strange as im applying for this at university this year! i guess ive always been attracted to the challenge.)

In terms of girls, i've never shown particular interest. Not that im gay or anything, i'd just compare myself to the Arutha type character(from the Riftwar saga.) I think its because i find women both complicated and overly flirtatious most of the time. Sometimes youre just looking for friendship and youre getting all these mixed signals... meh i prefer my books :D

I guess overall im the eccentric guy that everyone gets along with, but i prefer to keep to myself, taking my book in each day to read at lunch or using my free time at college to study.

Not really. It was just that science-oriented highschool. With quite hard entry exams.

i dont find england so bad for smart people. im quite smart but i never put enough effort in to be the best (no motivation). ive always been a geek and proud and maintain a good social life, probs helped by the fact that in secondary school (highschool or w/e it is) i successfully crashed anything and everything on the school network at the same time and of course the "popular" people then stopped calling me a geek in what they thought was an offensive way.

just started first year of college doing decision maths, business studys, music tech and computing. i also spend an hour on the bus every morning and im regularly late, but i just got my first car so hopefully i can drive soon so i can have more leisurely sleeping times.

for gym i was always just average, unless it was the kind of sport that could get me angry in which case i tend to become much stronger etc cos i would like to hurt someone.

I was a badass.. once 200+ boys of all ages gathered to shank me and a few other guys because we were the only boys left in the school with long hair (going through a nazish 'cut your hair or die' stage but it seemed important at the time not to conform) lunch was cancelled early to stop the violence.. one of my friends had to go to hospital after someone threw a rock at his head

I was basically an outsider in hs. It was a lousy private school run by a guy who started schools just to make money. They enticed us with lots of promises of school trips, laptops, good teachers etc etc. I hated going there because I never learned anything, going there took 1 hour and the same back. There was maybe one or two teachers which I felt were good, and taught me some valuable things. The rest were mostly inexperienced flunkies from teacher programs at uni, who washed up on the Stygian shore that was my school.
After 1.5 years of that shit I had enough, I started skipping classes, just went there for exams and mandatory exercises. I was smart enough that I still managed to graduate in time with decent grades despite spending most of my days at home on the computer, well maybe that is actually why I passed, I was learning new things useful in my future life, while other kids were just standing in the empty corridors talking crap, the popular ones hooking up, falling in love, partying and all that stuff which is part of the hs experience I guess, which I totally missed out on in hindsight.

In my hs we didn't have a gym or even class. There was only the two times when the "gym teacher/consultant" made us go on training bikes, then he measure our pulse rates, and wrote down our grade based on that number. I'm really not making this shit up, my hs was basically a for-profit scam milking the broken school system in my country. A disillusioned teacher that quit actually wrote a book about my school, fittingly called 'The child market'.

I banged the hottest chick in school on my English teacher's desk in last period when I was a senior, that was entertaining.

For the fuck of me I can't remember the name of the class. I already had all my credits by my sophmore year except I was missing my english 4 credit and lit 4 credit (because I didn't take extra lit and english classes like I did with science, history, math, etc in the previous years). Anyway, this class was the one I needed to get a basically BS credit. It was the one where you do the school paper, but I can't remember what you call it, publications or some shit (someone help me out here)?

Anyway, my english teacher (who was also the varsity basketball coach -- I was a starting guard) was the teacher of this class, but there were only 5 of us in it and we only had to do shit like once every now and then (because the paper only came out like once every 3 months), so we had a bunch of time to kill.

Just so happens that the hottest chick in school was in that class (I'd kinda sorta known her for a while), but longs story short, one day, the teacher wasn't there, and neither were the other 3 kids, so one thing led to another, and 10 minutes into the class I had a handful of boobs, 15 minutes in, I was pulling up her skirt, and about 35 minutes in we damn near got caught by our teacher who was outside of the locked door and knocking. Hehe, good times :-)

Amazingly enough, she was one of 2 hots girls that actually stayed hot after high school (all the fugly chicks all of a sudden got fucking incredible, and all of the super hot ones got super fugly... If I ever have it to do over again, I'mma go back and bang every fugly chick in school, cause one day she's gonna be like DAYUM, and I'mma be liek, Ya I hit it.).

Highschool was very good to me... There was snatch everywhere just for the taking. Unfortunately, right around 25 or so, I realized what it's like to actually have to work for that shit :-(.

Protip: Learn to play guitar and hard rock/metal, then start/join a band, all of a sudden, the highschool years are back with a vengeance 8)

How can you read while eating? How can you have the time to read after eating?
For me its just "Oh crap lecture starts in 15 min" *eat**eat* gulp drink down, run outside.
Time and clocks dont work for me I think.

Its always good to be amongst equals, this is why I dont like school systems where you are taught with the idiots.

For preciseley these reasons:

In High-School I had this friend called... oh crap...Dmitri? He was from some former Soviet country (possibly the Ukraine)... and he only lived in Canada for like 5 years so I didn't know him "all" that well... anyway, he explained that in his country (and he claimed most former Soviet countries) that after what we'ed call "primary" school the smart/special/rich kids would be moved to better/specialized schools that would be closer to our colleges then what we'ed recognize as a highschool.

I had very few "crazy" experiences in highschool that weren't cantered on the Robotics Team... I tried to join the Anime club but it was on the same day as my Male Close Harmony Group practice... most of my friends were band kids, because the vocal kids were mostly cocky guys who thought they could sing, or were gay, or were ALSO band kids (the entire Saxaphone section of the band were in the baritone section of the vocal class with me...)... anyways, so we hung out in the band room playing cards most of the time when not in classes. I had managed to act as a net for a additional group of guys with geeky leanings who had had the fortune of sitting near me in class... we had very only a few females in our group but were on good terms with enough of them that there were usually a good number around playing cards with us etc.

The culture of our school was quite different from what I see reflected on television and people who transfered in or visited from other schools often pointed out that our culture was a-typical of highschools in the area... my band geek group would often intermingle with the "Athletes" and "Student Government" types because for some reason, of the 10 or so people from my graduating class in grade 6 who came with me all the way to high-school, the majority ended up as team captains and student body presidents... the entire football team actually participated in our highschool's production of the taming of the shrew... a class of "Advanced" students (we called them "Gifted Kids", basically they had gotten very high scores on aptitude tests and as such had special "Smart Kids" classes) stood up simultaneously and did the Charleston in class one day and were lauded for it... I used to hang out in the library and read at lunch, one day I got permission to check out a record player and the old "War of the Worlds" radio play and listened to it on headphones in the corner of the library over the course of a few lunches... one time I got a week long ban from the library for jumping over the barrier that prevented people from entering or exiting with tagged library material...

There was a group of Anarchists calling themselves the "Paper towel Ninja's" who roamed the halls wearing masks made of Paper towels... there was a group of people who had stolen the letter K from a nearby sign and had mounted it on a stick and paraded around worshipping it with cult-like rituals... there was a fellow who, despite only having social status among the geeks who played SNES in the hall outside of the lunchroom, decided to run for student body president... in his campaign speech his platform was layed out that, if elected, he would kill us all systematically and raise us as a Zombie army... when he failed to win, stead of taking down his posters he crossed out the words "Student Body President" and Wrote "Sprit Rep" in black magic marker... as these elections were held seperately... the school had a basement that was innacessable to students... essentially a series of catecombs combining the massive furnace room, the sand-pits under the science classes (once a boat was seen on one of these sandy shores) and there was rumoured to be an escape tunnel leading from the priciples office to the catecombs)

When a group of Christians made a complaint against the Anime club because they were claimed to be showing "pornographic material" (it was DNA^2... it's not exactly pornographic, just a little ecchi) the Priciples official reply was "Really? I think I'm going to have to join the Anime club"

Random Stuff happened all the time and there was no real "class" system... yes the Jocks and "Popular Kids" got elected to class government but otherwise there wasn't much evidence that popularity mattered.

I was popular enough, hung out with all the social demographics except the thugs. Was well known for a tendency to fight just about anyone over just about anything but truthfully just wanted to be left alone. Most people picked fights with me because they heard that I was some kind of badass and they wanted to prove something. Eventually from the few fights I actually was pressed into people thought I was tough and mean enough to leave me alone and I was happily treated well for most of my hs years, allowing me to hang with whoever I wanted.

In general I was probably popular with girls because I had a bad boy rep but in reality I really didn't want it, I don't like people being afraid of me(hard to believe I know). I had a steady stream of gfs but was under a strict vow of celibacy which forced me to leave one gf. Then I got in a relationship with one chick and missed out on this smoking hot chick who wanted me to go with her to prom(she was like a white version of hanai miri for god's sake!). Probably is my only regret, but even if I went with her, I wouldn't have slept with her so maybe it wasn't a loss.

so yeah, I guess I was the tsudere guy.

:P Forb, you are such a slut.

I knew and would hang around with people from many different social groups and got along with a lot of the teachers at my school, but didn't participate in many school activities. I was part of the space club (we did a lot of different cool experiments in there), the library club, and I liked to hang out in the robotics lab and with computer programmers as well. I was great at taking things apart, and working on the robotics equipment in the robotics lab. I knew people who were into anime even though there wasn't an anime club, but I never got into that because all they ever talked about was Sailor Moon which I wasn't interested in.

I did not have a very good reputation at my school because the students didn't like it when someone from the city moved into their community. They viewed me as an outsider because I transferred there from a magnet (school for high achieving academics) school in Baton Rouge. I didn't want to move away from my old school either because I had made straight A's, done all of this extra work, scored high on my admissions tests, and wanted to take the gymnastics classes at my old school. Plus, my older sister also went to the new school with me and had a very bad reputation. She ended up getting pregnant and dropping out, leading many people to believe that I was a slut even though I was a virgin throughout high school, was a late developer, and went to some of the Christian groups' meetings to learn about what they were doing. I was also accused of devil worship and fussed at by a teacher who was a religious fanatic (and I knew a lot of them from several different religious groups as well) for drawing pictures of dragons.

I had a job as a shift manager, walked to school, did much of my own grocery shopping by walking to the grocery store, paid for my own lunch, paid for martial arts lessons, and started my own savings account to save money. I spent most of my time after school doing homework and hanging out in the dojo along with my friends there. They were older than me because it was an advanced class and thought that I was a cute kid. I also had an awesome martial arts teacher who did a great job of teaching us self-discipline!

In hindsight, it was probably better that I went to the regular school because I had to work so much and help take care of my little sister as well. Also, as a result of my circumstances, I wasn't really into high school even though I did well and had some good experiences. I am glad it's over, would never want to be a high school student again, and thought that college was much better.

Heh, yeah, I was (sorta) into Sailor Moon back in high school... but there really wasn't much anime available to the general public back then and here comes Sailor Moon acting like it was all mainstream. Also, Amy was hot and if you squinted during the transformations it looked like the scouts were nude... I was in high school.

This reminds me, there was this guy in a few of my classes (including art) who was an AWESOME artist, I wonder what happened to him (you reminded me due to the HS topic and the one time he was drawing this angel dude with a sword and I asked him if it was Vengence and he said no, it's Lucifer)
Panda wrote: would never want to be a high school student again, and thought that college was much better.
High School wasn't so bad as grade-school for me... I had bully problems in grade-school and a really unstable emotional state... I remember crying a lot. Okay, well, the first 2 years of HS were pretty awful too though I don't even remember why...

College was awesome and Summer Camp was the best.

I can take my t-shirt off in one fluid movement with one hand... Not really even close to as crazy as what you said I suppose and entirely unrelated to highschool so I'll add another HS related story to validate my post:

One time, while we were at the Canada FIRST National Robotics Competition I slept in the same bed as a girl. Given the fact that there were 3 other guys also in the room (including the guy who was supposed to be sleeping in the bed beside me but was too weirded out by being in the same bed as a guy so had opted to sleep on the chair beside the bed... which was why there was room for her in the first place) and the fact that she had a boyfriend it doesn't really count... but it was fun to say to the boyfriend "hey I slept with your girlfriend last night"...
