Somebody make a map like this that is just all one height but has buildings and roads on it. Basically, take a city map and squash it flat.

Well, consider it this way, the kits suck at creativity, most of there parts are unique, which means they can not be reused, while those rummage lego (if you have fantasy) can be rebuilt into anything.

Still i consider lego one of the best toys, it has brought up generations of engineers and artists.

i know EXACTLY what you mean!
really, wanted to post exactly this too. i guess the lego makers figured out that the normal lego, the ones you can use for anything, are not gonna be THE business, as a lot of them are out there already, they don't ever break, they don't get old, and you can not put a big price on them, cause china would just flood the market with ultra cheap replicas.
so ... "we need a new market strategy!" (isn't this how all great stories end?)
make these special parts, that can only be used for special themed stuff, like eg star wars, and couple them to movie and game releases, ...
yeah, business saved! (maybe?) kids getting dumper! (who cares? i mean.. their bad if they bring their kids to a battle!)

yes the themed stuff (harry potter, indianer jones and whatnot) is really bad.

for my own only had fischertechnik which is cool too. kind of like lego technics.
