Tune Up
I've got a fairly large (46 Gigs) Itunes library and it's a total mess. I'm looking for something to clean it up. I keep seeing adds for tune up. But the 30 dollar price tag seems a bit steep. Aside from manually fixing it are their any other apps that would do the job or should i just fork over the cash and buy tune up?

Re: Tune Up
"The Godfather" is/used to be quite a popular free tool for tagging mp3, sorting etc.
Re: Tune Up
please tell me you haven't been taken over by an advertising-bot. wouldn't a better link be something like this: http://www.tuneupmedia.com/index.php instead of direct link to buying the app?
there are lots of batch-renamer programs (that can do id3 info as well) you might have to put in a few lines here and there so its not completely automatic but 10x better than manually and they're free.
In my experience, albeit quite limited, i-stuff tries to not be compatible with anything except i-stuff. There could be compatibility issues so it really comes down to whether you want to spend time looking for a program to do it, or have faith that this one will, and be willing to shell out some money (or find someone to share it with you)

Re: Tune Up
Why the hell are you using iTunes? Apparently snoop hasn't heard of the joys of torrenting.
At least use a service that doesn't suck, like napster (10 bucks a month unlimited downloads).
Winamp might actually be able to help.

Re: Tune Up
I use foobar2000 + a discogs plugin to tag untagged stuff
Re: Tune Up
My wife uses iTunes to organize/play music (namely because she has an iPod)... all of her CD's are ripped to mp3 using CDex and then iTunes has no problem importing them... torrented mp3s (let's pretend I'm talking about libre music from a source like overclocked remix) get imported and processed very well... and while I personally use VLC for it's reduced system requirements overhead I see no reason not to use iTunes as a media client and never buy a track from apple (in addition you get the added bonus of getting free tracks every week at starbucks)Forboding Angel wrote:Why the hell are you using iTunes? Re: Tune Up
yeah but once its in itunes you can never get it back
well you might be able to with some special software but my sister brought me her ipod for some reason and I could read/play songs from it on my linux box, but all the filenames were foobar and separated into dozens of gibberish folders.
I was going to write some more but got distracted.
tl;dr: drm sucks

You are incorrect in your assumptions.maackey wrote:yeah but once its in itunes you can never get it back![]()

iTunes doesn't screw up your files and add DRM to them when you import them... it does so when they are pushed to the iPod. AKA after importing MP3's into iTunes you can still play them with VLC etc. even after they are "pushed" to the iPod, only the copies on the iPod are unplayable... the original files on your hard drive are not "DRMed" in the process, only the version of these files on the iPod
Re: Tune Up
Even at that point it's pretty easy to get songs off an ipod with some free software.
Re: Tune Up
drm sucks was a little out of context (I was running late), cause apple has DRM-free music store doesn't it? Quicktime was one of the worst applications I've ever had on a pc, (only one worse I think was Kazaa-- a friend put it on and subsequently got a virus on it
) not because it was bad software, but purely because of its infectious nature and constant urging to install other shovelware and apple products down my throat. Ever since I said goodbye to quicktime I've never had to deal with anything similar (although now adobe flash is doing something dangerously similar)
ps. wow I had this open for a few hours (because I got distracted yet again. perhaps it is a sign to stay away from apple products

Re: Tune Up
So I bought tune up. Here's my quick review.
WHAT I LIKE
It is pretty simple, you just drag music into the side bar and it gives it tags and album art, if it's in the right format. So that's a plus that it actually does what it's supposed to do. And I like the little concerts tab. It looks at bands in your library and gives you dates and links.
WHAT I DON'T LIKE
It's not super automated. There's no "clean library" button. I have to drag songs in 500 at a time.
I don't like some of the tags it's giving my music. Black Keys are "classic rock revival"
It does not detect duplicate tracks.
Most concerning of all it keeps request access to utorrent while it's running.
ALL IN ALL
It's ok but not exactly what i want.

Re: Tune Up
You buy music via a crappy program and then you need to buy another program to tag your collection.
What comes next?
