Yeah, it's kinda odd that in computer fields, people feels that "can be done" only refer to whether it's technically possible, completly forgetting that there might be legal and ethical limits in addition to technical ones.

I mean, when walking in the street, do you throw stones at cars considering the road builders are to blame for not securing the pavement against projectiles attacks? Do you steal everything that isn't behind shatter proof locked glass? Do you punch whoever does not wear body armour?

Technically, not true. If you steal and harass, no matter through the medium, law still apply. Whether your harass via postal mail, via email, or via voice, you're subject to the same anti-harassment law.

The wild wilderness of the far web is a myth, brewed by politician trying to squeeze some votes by scaring the grandmothers, trying to feel important by making useless laws on subject they don't understand.

The only trouble is that laws are mostly thought on a national level. If your harasser is your neighbour, you can complain to the local cop and they can go see the troublemaker within the hour. But if you live in Sweden and your harasser is in Mozambic, good luck making judiciary system from countries so apart trying to work together for anything but very big cases.

Internets bring another issue, which is that it abolishes physical distance. Everybody is right next to everybody else. I mean, when securing your house, you only have to worry about the burglars that scour your block. On the internet, burglar from the whole word can poke your security. It's like if every night, thousands of burglars from all over the world would prod at your door lock.

As for the web supposed anonymity, well, it doesn't hold once a judge start sending letters to ISP and webmasters. Sure truely anonymous system exist, but what fraction of internet users are on them?
