Sonic 4

Post by SanadaUjiosan »

Any thoughts on Sonic 4 now that it's out?

I was an enormous Sonic fan when I was a kid, played Sonic 1-3 + Sonic & Knuckles all the time and drew him on the back of my worksheets at least once a day for years :-) Haven't touched Sonic since Sonic 3D Blast though

Needless to say, was excited about Sonic 4, and I got it when it came out. I feel like they tried, and kind of succeeded, but I just feel like they still focused too much on annoying puzzles. Sonic is about speed, not figuring out dumb orders of lighting torches.

But, hard to say, since when I was little I could just sit and try stuff over and over. My patience is much lower these days for platformers.

Only played the demo and felt kinda jilted by the graphics... it looks like they copped out and are using cell shading... which while fine for other games doesn't provide the level of awesomeness that solid sprite-work would have provided.

Also, if you like the classic sonic games try Sonic Advance 2... very solid offering and very much in the style of the originals... I couldn't beat it however hard I tried... though the same could be said for all the original sonic games... I did beat Sonic 3 with my wife in two player mode when we were dating... but I was playing tails and only really provided significant assistance in the boss battles.

lol, yeah, my little brother as Tails saved the day several times.

I too was sad that they didn't go with sprites. When they first announced the game was "going back to basics" I assumed we were going to get some awesome sprite-work, but nope :(

Sonic team fails.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxXycBv3Rlk While this is a render, I would have preferred 2.5 3d look.

My brother, who doesn't give a shit about Sega team, lolled when he saw Sonic 4, and when he realized it came out 2010. One of the biggest enjoyments was going through a colorful world with graphics that were overwhelming at the time. Sonic 4 is a failure. Wtf is up with the music and you have to use jump attack to survive its so stupid. That and why was I walking up the wall when i hit it /:

So i wrap it up it, atmosphere, 0, music 0 for too many synths, map layout 0 for stupid ass boosters and having to do that jump crap to survive. Overall 0, an average score for a modern sonic game by sega to cash on the little boys and older manchilds who can't get past the fact that it now sucks..

I agree that the reliance on the jump attack is irritating. I don't so much mind it's inclusion in the game, but it is definitely called upon too much.

I am a strong proponent of more games using older techniques. I remember years ago when asked what I would want the next Age of Empires to be, I replied I wanted the graphics to be the same ole isometric 2.5D pixel art. I was balked at. I believe very strongly that those forms of art are just as valid as the prettiest 3D render.

That being said, those two videos you linked really excited me. I do like the more colorful tone of Sonic 4 though.

I know, from the evidence offered to my eyes by countless games, that many of the artists who created sprites with the limitations of past technology were more experienced, more dedicated and often produced better artwork than many of the modelers and skinners working professionally today. That, however, is a discussion for another thread.

I find most of the visuals provided by Sonic 4 awkward, but I might consider playing it if it were ported to a platform suited for it... like the PSP or GBA.

Limited in what way? Like just that it was a race to go right?

Just curious.

Yeah, that there was one defined path that you had to follow. Reminds me of them lego star wars games

I did not say that, and your attempt to recast my statement as the product of a defective perspective is correspondingly both ineffective and false. :regret:

There is beautiful, quality work in the modern age as well, but more titles are being produced under tighter schedules, with hardware and tools that afford many more options, in a less consistent society where certification has become increasingly important at the expense of ability - though actual demonstrated skill is still significant.

There's not one path. Since the first game, there's been multiple ways to traverse various stages. Some are faster, some are harder.

I feel this is was heavily worked in for Sonic 4
