I'd prefer it if torches didn't go out; it's hard enough to maintain a nice place already. This is, of course, moot if lanterns have a cheap enough recipe, like 8 lanterns to 1 iron and 1 coal.

They will not be cheap though. I would bet on it. Even so, having to relight torches is better than them burning out completely... also redstone torches >:)

I like it because it gives flint more reason.

I want that and I don't even have Minecraft yet (the money should arrive tomorrow) so I went and downloaded Clonk Endeavour instead which is a kinda similar game that I played back in '99 (well, I played Clonk 4 but Endeavour is just a more developed version of the same codebase).

From what I read on the wiki a redstone torch's light is just below the threshold that prevents monster spawning, while the chance goes down with more light it's still not impossible for monsters to spawn right under the torch and then there's falloff to account for.

indeed. not saying the red stone torches will prevent was more suggesting to line halls with them. hit the light switch to see what is down there. Put lamps where you need safe zones etc. It is an exciting thought.

If lamps require iron then they will be a bitch to make.

otherwise should be easy.

Its not the torches going down that is the problem, its the entire system of spawning monsters in the dark and the light being the deterrent.

That is so awesome! I love the pumpkin helmet idea too! I think that this would be great to play at a video game Halloween party along with watching "Shawn of the Dead", "Beetlejuice", "Underworld", "Van Helsing" and "Young Frankenstein" and eating deviled eggs.

Minecraft was always pretty cool, but its just insane how popular it has become.

Would be funny if you could use a pumpkin helmet to disguise yourself as a creeper and prevent other creepers from hunting you.
