Protip: Run win7 with UAC on (I mean seriously... why wouldn't you?), use the windows firewall, proper AV (Avast is my fav here, Nod32 if you feel like you have to pay for AV), firefox with adblock.
Shit will be fine.
Compared to win7, winxp IS a virus.

Just run your dirtywork through a vm that does not communicate with the host machine (I.E. Not directly connected via virtual network).
