Mappack! (contests, too!)

Post by MidKnight »

I present you the latest strike in the war against constant DSD matches!

The As-Yet-Unnamed Spring Holiday Map pack!

Maps in this mappack aim to:
  • Play well
  • Look nice
  • Showcase (relatively) new spring mapping features (SSMF, detailtex splatting, all the new map gadgets, etc)
  • Provide a complete experience to someone used to more 'conventional' rts games
  • Be playable with most popular Spring games
Meeting all these criteria is certainly not necessary, these are just some guidelines to work with.

I think we'd need at least
  • 1 1v1 map
  • 2 2v2-4v4 maps
  • 3 DSD/Tabula-sized maps
  • 2 FFA maps
  • 1 huge map

So, contests!

I need map submissions! You can submit a map you already made, or make one for the map pack. (I'd be flattered :3)
You can also nominate a map that's not yours!

A second contest: Suggest a name for this map pack! My hope is that, once is done, people will pick it up, and, to play on a good map that's not DSD, you could just vote for a map in the pack, no downloading involved! A nifty name would probably help achieve this!

I don't have any prizes to offer yet (why not make another contest for prize ideas, MK?), but, at the very least, winners will receive Trophy shaped PNG images! Exciting, right? you'd also be doing something nice for the community and get your name in a file on every Spring player's computer! (alright, that's just unrealistic. :P )

If we can get something like this together by this holiday season, I'd consider it a big win for the Spring community!

i like this idea.

i'll make one! feel free to grab frozen fortress, but hell, ill make another anyways.

few points...
- what is the difference between a 4x4 map and a dsd/tab map? give us some guidelines!
- lets open this up a bit for layout designs too; ive got a few from others that im planning to make, but if someone who isnt necessarily a mapper wants to design something, maybe this would be a good forum to take a suggestion (community effort and all that)
- maybe we can get collaboration with autohost operators and get some "mk map pack" themed hosts... this seems like it would be instrumental in breaking the DsD deadlock

Well, with a 2v2-4v4 sized-map, I'm hoping to hit comet catcher's sweet spot, where it's perfect for anything from a 4 player game all the way up to an 8 or 10 player game. Some good examples would be Archer's valley (12x12) and Comet Catcher itself (12x16).

For comparison, DSD is 20x10, Tabula is 16x14, and Altored Divide is 16x16

Now , I get the feeling that it may not be just size that influences this. For example, your own map, Stormsiege, is 8x16, but it plays more like a dsd/tabula sized map. :?

Sounds like an excellent idea! :-)

This, too.

Mearth, Epic, and DWorld are some good examples. Check them out! :-)

Comet is awfully crowded for 8 or 10 players... 6 players is already kinda boring for it. DSD, Hunters maps, etc. are pretty much 2v2-4v4 maps as far as I see

It is aimed to play well with what game?

How would the mappack maps be more attractive to players than just any map? Whats your advertisement plan
For autohosts I think there's a ton of maps available if you just want to play them. 1 thing that's missing though is more hosts with low playerlimits - it's not that rare for all 1v1 autohosts for example to be full

Also what holiday is it now :O

CCR is no more than a 4v4 map. Any more than that and it's just annoying.

Maps like Terra, Tundra, MoonQ20x, battle for planet whatever, and tropical etc, would all be good.

Tundra and moon are good 1v1-4v4, battle is great 1v1, tropical is a good 3v3/4v4, and tangarine is good 3v3-5v5.

But I'm not so sure how well this would work out. I like the idea, but since we have autohosts and autodownloading I don't see any motivation for getting a map pack rather than just autodownloading everything.

I think it's a fine idea and you can expect a map(s) from me before the holiday season.

Eye Of Horus is perfectly designed for 3v3 games

I dont understand what so special you CA dudes see in archers valley? How can that map, btw, hold up 10 players? And for comet, It's okay for exceptionally many players because it has so much metal and open space. Though I'd personally prefer it max 8 players.

SSMF! Give it SSMF! :P

It's the default map on the CA autohosts, and people CBA to change it. :|

I think comet's an alright map, but overplayed and not particularly attractive. I prefer 6 or max 8 players, too.

Also:
Because I find myself unable to be online at the same time as oksnoop2 and can't seem to get messagebot to auto-reconnect on the new windows installation, I'll post my answer to his question here:

Code: Select all

<oksnoop2> how many players do each ffa map need to support?
Anywhere from 4 to 16!
I hope I can gather at least one small FFA map and one big one.

Additionally, a good 3-player map would be nice. Am I the only one who's played scores of DesertTriad games while waiting for more players to join?

I vote for DSI: http://mapinfo.adune.nl/?map=DeltaSiege_Island_8_Way
It can be played with any amount of players greatly. It includes all types of tactical depths: water, hover, ground, air, etc. It looks fun, it is fun!

I also made epic video from it at youtube:

I find CCR is irritating to play on with less than 8, because it's just got so damned many metal patches. Tedious as hell to keep building mexes.

Wait, both contests?
Also, could you possibly please pimp it up with an SSMF layer? :3

Hunter, I could SSMF talus if you so desire. Would you mind me putting the smallest patter of features on it though? Ill run it through you for approval when I get the time.

Also, I would like to include Mescaline V2 for this package. As it qualifies for all points listed:

I wholeheartedly approve. You can always nab my palm tree meshes out of Tumult, they would work down in the sandy area.
