it actually works. well.

and there's a premade enclosure for doing this if you want to burn some money.

500W recommended by GFX manufacturer, and he gets a 550W PSU for for the GFX card alone!

Hmm, how much power would a GFX card alone really need though? Would it be enough to grab a weak PSU from some old unused computer...

if i remember correctly, my very first PC PSU was 230W.
if the recommendation for the whole system, including GFX card is 500W, i can not imagine that the GFX card needs more then 200W alone.

nvidia says gtx 480 is 250w max, so any new cheap $5-10 ~400w psu would probably work for any graphics card

Well after reading some more into this, it looks like the only way for this to work is an external display, which means using the laptop as a desk top. With that much trouble you might as well buy a desk top.
