JBT's made quite a few Flash games, many of which have been ironic statements about Flash game culture and design.
Some of them are good, but a lot of them have just been snarky or silly.
When he made Balloon In a Wasteland, he almost got it to that transcendent level that few Flash games ever quite find, but it never quite made it, in my opinion, despite an awesome art feel.
This is a game where he hit it out of the park. For lack of a nicer word... this is a masterpiece of platform game design. From the level designs to the music to the graphical tricks to the careful hacks of the physics to the UI... this is an awe-inspiring game.
I don't even like platformers, and it's still an obvious classic. Don't miss this one.

<shrugs> It's a flash game. Just play it, silly person. I could write an essay about why it works, but there's no point for something that costs nothing and can be played in 30 seconds on a broadband connection.
Re: Exit Path
Oo...I DID play it and now I'm asking what is so special about it...
Maybe I don't play enough flash game to recognize a masterpiece...
When i think of classic flash games or flash games that stuck in my mind I think about that sea flash game where you have to constantly swallow bigger sea creatures as you grow bigger yourself.
I also think about that game where you play this little creature and all you do is just explore the world in all directions without any goals.
Sorry i don't remember their names(if anyone does please write them)..
I don't see what makes this particular game original or very memorable...

Re: Exit Path
Feels like it got inspiration for the setting from Portal. The flow mechanic feels superfluous, I've used it in maybe 3 out of 30 levels.
Re: Exit Path
I don't understand, it's an average flash platformer.
N is better.
N is better.
Re: Exit Path
You guys need to keep playing a little longer than the first 5 levels.
The flow mechanic is level-based, like most of the other stuff. I guess it's arguable that it should have become a special mechanic and left out of the UI, but there needed to be some display of the feature, and I can't really argue much about the levels where it's not being used; if it was ubiquitous, it would have been a very one-dimensional platformer.
And N's all right, but that's like comparing an apple to a Chevy Impala.

Re: Exit Path
It's definitely one of the better flash games. Still I also don't really see it as special in any way. You control your character and run and jump around avoiding obstacles while having quite some inertia and a boost option after having run for a while. The scenario is more or less a 0815 Portal ripp-off. Graphics are nice and clean while the style is just the simple black&white except for special stuff thing...
I have to agree though that this flow boost thing really didn't add that much as it was extremely obvious when you had to use it and that was just in a couple of situations. Having it of course isn't a shortcoming...

Fancy Pants 2

The best flash platformer I ever played was Fancy Pants Adventure 2. It's such a notable game it even has a wikipedia entry. And you know how wikipedians are eager to speed delete articles about non-major games.
Anyway, what Argh tells about Exit-Path, actually applies to Fany Pants Adventure World 2 (yeah World 1 isn't as good, like the difference between SMB1 and SMB3):

Try some Canabalt.
Re: Exit Path
Canabalt mechanic is simplistic to the max: only one button, to perform a single action, jumping. But it has a very good atmosphere.Das Bruce wrote:Try some Canabalt.

Did you play that unicorn game?same principle.zwzsg wrote:Canabalt mechanic is simplistic to the max: only one button, to perform a single action, jumping. But it has a very good atmosphere.Das Bruce wrote:Try some Canabalt.
Re: Exit Path
Yes, didn't enjoy it, atmosphere is important.
Re: Fancy Pants 2
do you happen to know the name of the other game i was describing?zwzsg wrote:flOwGota wrote:When i think of classic flash games or flash games that stuck in my mind I think about that sea flash game where you have to constantly swallow bigger sea creatures as you grow bigger yourself.
You start with a little creature and all you do is explore the 2d world.you cannot interact with anything you just move around entering different zones with different looks and music.

Re: Exit Path
What makes this game so special? I don't see the point of it, it's a platformer.
Re: Exit Path
Robot unicorn attack is the only flash platformer worthy of note!
Re: Exit Path
its pretty cool...
i should take another whack at making a flash game tho; blow this one out of the water ^^

Re: Exit Path
It's portal, but with boringish platforming instead of puzzles. I can name indie games in the genre I prefer to Exit Path, and I can name flash games that compete in quality with many indie games... so why should I be impressed by this?
Re: Exit Path
Canabalt is a gimmick in search of a game. It was meant to be a tech demo, for goodness sakes.
